This is a task from the Illustrative Mathematics website that is one part of a complete illustration of the standard to which it is aligned. Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: Historians estimate that there were about 7 million people on the earth in 4,000 BCE. Now there are about 7 billion! We write 7 million as 7,000,000. W...

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) videos are designed to support states, schools, and teachers in the implementation of selected math standards. Each video is an audiovisual resource that focuses on one or more specific standards through examples and illustrations geared to enhancing understanding. The intent of each content-focused video is to clarify the meaning of the individual standard rather than to be a guide on how to teach each standard, although the examples can be adapted for instructional use.

This is one possible method for using the area model for division.
With this division strategy, students divide by breaking the dividend into its expanded form. Then, students use familiar multiplication facts to divide. It is suggested that this would be the first of three strategies for division (preceding partial quotients and the standard algorithm.

This activity focuses on the importance of using mathematics to find deals when grocery shopping. Students will analyze data from local grocery store advertisements and determine the best deals by using multiple strategies. This task will also require students to find and compare unit rates, which connects the fourth grade concepts of solving problems involving money and using place value understanding to do arithmetic to the sixth grade standard of determining a unit rate. Once students find which store offers the best deal, they will create a public service announcement teaching others how to find the best deals when grocery shopping. This public service announcement is an opportunity to use precise mathematical language and construct viable arguments. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
