In this assessment task students will hunt around the room to find objects that are the same length as the items on the assessment tasks. They are to find something that measures the same as lengths such as two square tiles a pencil or three post it notes. Students will draw and write the name of the object on the task sheet. The teacher should prepare the objects that students measure with prior to the assessment. An assessment task sheet and a rubric are provided.

Students will view a video clip, choose their own non-standard unit of measure, measure the room and then answer thoughtful questions about the activity. Students will create a unit of measure that is equal to ten of the original unit and will make predictions about how the measurement values will change. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Lesson plan using a Cyberchase activity, gives students practice in estimating heights and lengths of objects when the measurement tools are not rulers. Two different kinds of measurement units allow students to measure by repeating the measurement with a single smaller object, and to measure with an object that is composed of multiple repeating units.
