In this lesson, students will explore controversial symbols, the historical significance behind these symbols, and the harmful effects of such when used today. Students will further explore everyday activities that are important to them and gain a comparative understanding of how Jews were restricted from these same activities based on anti-Semitic laws and regulations passed by the Nazi party. Students will examine the role of anti-Semitic propaganda in schools, as well as Hitler's use of propaganda as a means of setting the stage for mass genocide. This lesson will assist students in understanding the roots and ramifications of prejudice, racism, anti-Semitism, and stereotyping during the Holocaust.

Students will view photographs from Ana Mendieta's "Silueta Series" and consider the integration of body art, earthworks, performance art, and photography. Students will also discuss art forms that are temporary or ephemeral and how photographic and video documentation become part of the work. Students will explore the concept of body language, work in pairs to create silouhettes of their own, create imprints or molds with their hands or feet, work in groups to create a work of ephemeral art and document the process, and discuss their own personal bond with a homeland or cultural heritage.

Have You "Herd"? Modeling Influenza's Spread

In this lesson, students will be engaged in activities to increase their understanding of modeling as a tool for public health preparedness. In the first portion of the lesson, students will obtain simulated patient samples and perform a test to determine if these patients are positive for a simulated rapid influenza diagnostic test. By using this information, students will interpret their results, considering false-positive and false-negative test results. As the lesson progresses, the scale of the outbreak scenario will increase, and students will use mathematical models to calculate the transmissibility of the virus and countermeasures that would be needed to limit the spread of influenza. Students will examine the herd immunity threshold of a population by determining the vaccine efficacy. Final questions will challenge the students to analyze the benefits, limitations, and applications of modeling for preparing and responding to future pandemics.

This cross-curricular lesson combines Social Studies and Language Arts to demonstrate how the study of an historical topic can be developed to make learning nonfiction more exciting, and also improve fluency and comprehension. This project about Benjamin Franklin includes a series of lessons in which the students: 1) read for information from multiple texts, 2) write a script for a Readers Theater play, 3) read for expression and fluency by using their script, 4) enhance their reading with visual arts, and 5) demonstrate dramatic interpretation through role-play. This approach engages students throughout in active participation and collaboration. Included are many supporting resources, such as a read-aloud rubric, an audition sheet, and ideas for student assessment and reflection.
