In this lesson, students will know the appearance of the moon changes in a specific pattern and repeat this sequence over the course of approximately 28 days. In addition, discuss that Earth’s rotation causes one side of planet Earth to receive light rays from the sun. Earth to receive light rays from the sun. This phenomenon is called day. (Understand, Key Concept 2). Discuss that Earth’s rotation causes one side of planet Earth not to receive light rays from the sun. This phenomenon causes darkness which is called night. Lesson integrates computer science using Bee-Bots

This unit is focused on figurative language, covering common core standards in language, literature for reading, and speaking and listening with the final assessment.  It is designed to be used with a workshop model, where there is some form of opening for brief instruction, partner and/or independent work time, and a closing time for sharing within each lesson.

This unit includes a combination of fourth grade writing and social studies standards. It focuses on research and public discourse.

Bottle flip ratio activity - Learning what ratios are, students will be challenged to engage in a bottle flip ratio game, where the students will flip a water bottle 5 times and will have to predict how many times it will land straight up. Then, after completing the 5 rounds, they will write the ratio for the actual results. To ‘amp’ up the next challenge, the students will have to brainstorm how much more water they should add to the water bottles to see if they can make a more accurate prediction of how many many times the water bottle will actually land upright. They will see if their prediction ratio is closer to the result ratio.

 Students will construct a tower as high as possible using spaghetti, lasagna noodles and marshmallows. Limited supplies of materials are available. Pieces of spaghetti can be broken into desired lengths.
