Students will study Robert Rauschenberg's "Barge, 1962-63" and consider statements made by critics at the time. Students will also create a timeline of what was happening in the 1960's in the US. Students will identify the various processes used in "Barge". Students will also brainstorm images representative of their own community and create a collage from newspaper, magazine, and other image sources. They will also apply paint to the work. Students will also approach the subject through screenprinting.

Our final chapter in 2nd grade is all about history - how we study it and how we learn about places - especially our community. The authors recognized early on that it would be impossible for us to write a community history for every community in Michigan, so we continue with our study of two - a small town and a larger town. Our hope is that you’ll have students make connections between these two featured communities and their own. How are they alike? How are they different?

* Work in groups as "city planners" and "architects" to create a proposal for a home construction.
* Research examples of high-rise housing by other architects and compare them to the Highrise of Homes project and high-rise housing where you live.
