This parent guide supports parents in helping their child at home with the 1st Grade Science content.
This resource accompanies our Rethink 1st Grade Science Forces & Motion unit. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 1st Grade Science in Forces & Motion.
This resource would probably be most helpful to use during literacy centers or independent work time. Students can listen to the 'playlist' of books on an iPad and then respond to questions about one of the stories.
Through this lesson, students learn about the four forces of flight: lift, thrust, drag, and weight. They evaluate the role design plays on aerodynamics and the distance a paper airplane travels.
NASA resource about forces and non-standard units of measurement. This resource has background reading that is fairly high level and great diagram, but no student-facing materials.
After reading Ricky the Rock That Couldn’t Roll, students will engineer a slope/hill and see if they can get a non-spherical rock to roll the length of it. Students will be given 4 (fake) dollars to buy materials according to their plan.
Creating a marble run is fun for all ages. For those who are younger, they are learning the basics of engineering design. As students get older and learn more about physics, the designs will get more elaborate.
Students can work collaboratively in small groups of 3-4 students for this engineering design unit that integrates literacy to explore forces and motion (pushes or pulls). Students will design a way to safely keep bunnies out of a garden.
This is a remix of a NASA resource that describes the forces of a rocket launch and uses non-standard units of measurement to collect data. The remix has added further details for students and also added a mention of Katherine Johnson and her contribution to space calculations. This student-facing handout has embedded links and a data table and is designed for a 1st grade math and science integration.
