Description
- Overview:
- Fundamentals of Biology focuses on the basic principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and recombinant DNA. These principles are necessary to understanding the basic mechanisms of life and anchor the biological knowledge that is required to understand many of the challenges in everyday life, from human health and disease to loss of biodiversity and environmental quality.

I am a Digital Learning Coach trying to find great resources for my teachers. As part of my job, I review technologies and support materials to make sure they are good to use. This is a great resource for very independent students who would like to go further than high school Biology. This course was originally created for MIT Freshman and that holds true to the language and teaching strategies within the modules. I am not even sure if the standards I chose are correct. The knowledge level seems so far above these standards that it is almost like you need to know these standards before taking this course.
I believe the course does have full alignment to depth and breadth of standard(s) tagged, if not at an even higher level than expected. The course has clear learning objectives that are achievable through the completion of this resource. At the beginning of every unit, and every chapter the student is told what they will be learning. The unit has clear and sufficient assessment strategies that will accurately measure student progress and mastery of the specified standards. Every chapter has video lessons that have a one or two question quiz. The quizzes are not mandatory but are there to help. There is also an exam at the end of every unit. Within the chapters, there are PDF's that hold problems to work out if you need the help and practice.
I have to say that the clarity and usability of the resource design are very strong and should be easy to use for almost anybody. Not being a biologist I am guessing that the content is accurate and appropriate for those intended to take this class.
I would also note that the video resource with interactive text needs to be fixed. I could click on a download link which opened a new window but did not give me the interactive text.
