Instructor Directions

“Take a Walk on the Wild VR Side”

Driving Question / ScenarioFocus question: How can I paint in VR and how does it compare to a physical medium such as paint?
Project SummaryThis project is designed for Visual Art Beginning students but can be used with any course introducing VR as a new medium. In this design process, students will create a painting using Tilt Brush in VR and will discover how the element of shape can evolve into the element of form. They will also experience how traditional painting can be very different from VR painting becoming a sculptural painting process.

Project Outline
AskWhat are the advantages and limitations of working in a virtual medium?
ImagineImagine you have been commissioned by the local zoo to create a drawing of zoo animals living in their natural habitat in VR. There will be a QR code that visitors will scan at the viewing location of the zoo for each of the animals. The QR code will link them to the VR image, providing them with a visual of the animal in their natural habitat.
PlanInvestigate/Research
  1. Research VR artist Anna Zhilyaeva to learn how contemporary artists are using Tilt Brush as a new painting medium.
  2. Watch- Painting in Virtual Reality with Google Tilt Brush.
  3. Visit Poly (poly.google.com) to research what others have done.
  4. In your sketchbook create a process two-page visual journal spread noting questions and constraints that are important to the project.
  5. Brainstorm zoo animals. Research zoo animals that you would like to paint in VR. saving images to be used as a guide. Research their natural habitat saving these images as well.
  6. Select the zoo animal you would like to begin with. Spend some time in your sketchbook,  practicing (process journaling) drawing the zoo animal in its habitat. Practice drawing the zoo animal from various viewpoints. Consider all of the natural elements found in the animal’s environment and make thumbnails of those as well. Observe carefully and practice in our sketchbook, with a pencil on how to simulate the textures of the animals and the natural environment. Add color if needed to reference once in VR Share with peers and your teacher for feedback on which one might be best.
  7. Select an image to begin your drawing with, and/or photograph your sketches to be used once you are in VR to be used as a reference point.
Create
  1. Set up the Oculus defining the area in which you will work. Make sure the floor is clean as you may end up laying on it to paint just like Michaelangelo did in the Sistine Chapel.
  2. Put on the Oculus and play a little as in the video with the brushes and colors.
  3. When you are ready, begin by drawing your zoo animal and its natural habitat as you did in your sketchbook. Bring in your photo reference(s) and begin with a 2-dimensional sketch.
  4. Then give it a wire type sculptural form.
  5. Continue to select textured brushes and various colors were needed for your image to be complete.
  6. Simulate the natural environment the best you can.
  7. When you are done create a video of your sculpture and a photograph.
ImproveUse the rubric to assess your final piece.
Closure / Student ReflectionsComplete the reflection for the project. A discussion of the revision of the piece is essential.
Possible Modifications /ExtensionsTry to paint several zoo animals in one scene. Add text that “labels” the zoo animal and natural environment. Try to make a painting using a one-point perspective drawing of a room or a city from above.
