This is a set of two, one-page problems about the sizes of moons in the solar system. Learners will use fractions to compare the sizes and distances of Jupiter's moons. Options are presented so that students may learn about the Juno mission through a NASA press release or by viewing a NASA eClips video [6 min.] about the creation of graphic of the 88 largest objects in our solar system. This activity is part of the Space Math multi-media modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school.

In Wonders Units 5, 6, 7 teachers will be working on all writing areas (narrative, expository & persuasive), but each Unit will have at least one week on Persuasive/Opinion Writing.  Therefore, Unit 5 & 6 will provide background knowledge on recognizing the difference between an opinion and fact.  Students will be able to learn key components within an opinion statement and begin to develop & write their own opinion statements.  This will provide practice for their end of Unit 7 Opinion Writing piece for Kindergarten. Students will participate in small groups to identify, form and program the route to opinions on the BeeBot map.

In this activity, students are given a series of fill-in-the-blank questions about the different parts of speech. A word bank has been included on each slide that contains all the words that will be used to fill in the blanks.  

Use this progress monitoring tool to help students build and track their sight word knowledge.  Seven different lists of words are provided for the students to master.  You can color code your list if you choose.  Students will be preassessed on the knowledge of 10 sight sords. You will record answers on the Sight Word Checklist and then hole punch the students sight word ring for the words they know.  Students will then work on the words they still need to master for the week.  Students will be checked at the end of the week for growth.  As the list of words are mastered, a new list of words can be added to the each studnet's sIght word ring.  

Compare the Greek and Roman gods' attributes with the characteristics of our planets.  

For this assignment, students will review prepositions through an activity, a video, and a website. They will have an opportunity to prove their knowledge through a Quiz game and a worksheet. Once they understand how to write prepositions, they will end the lesson by using prepositions to describe a room in their house. They can share their assignment through Voicethread or a Padlet.

Students will use Google Slides to publish a research project. This project will include links to other slides and information from the internet. Students will also search and add images from the internet and video to support their topic. This activity may take more than one class period.

Introducing the genre of Fantasy to students.  They will gain an understanding of the content and produce their own story for the product.  Modifications can be made on the length of the story the are to write.  There can also be a more in depth conversation on the genre by older groups.  

Many students read without questioning a text or analyzing the author's viewpoint. This will let students take any text and analyze the author's purpose and how it is developed. Extension: By reading two versions of the same tale and completing an interactive Venn diagram, students recognize that there are not only different versions of a story, but also different viewpoints to consider when reading.

Challenge: Make a sentence using each word in row 1. Challenge students to make sentences for each row and column in the grid.

Students will learn about the twin STEREO spacecraft and how they are being used to track solar storms through reading a NASA press release and viewing a NASA eClips video segment. Then students will examine data to learn more about the frequency and speed of solar storms traveling from the Sun to Earth. This activity is part of the Space Math multimedia modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school textbooks. The modules cover specific math topics at multiple levels of difficulty with real-world data and use the 5E instructional sequence.

The Jeopardy game template can be used as a resource to support reading skills development. The Jeopardy Labs site has many options for reading instruction in the areas of phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and other areas.

Today we will look at what opposites are and how we can count using these. If I said “happy face” what would be the opposite? What would the opposite be of cat? (This could be a mouse or a dog).

Our ‘Local Read Aloud’ is a spin-off of The Global Read Aloud, created by Pernille Ripp.  The idea is that we select one book to read aloud to our students over a span of six weeks.  During our six weeks of reading we connect with other classrooms across the district and discuss, create, and connect with the book and our peers.  We can use a variety of tools to connect, and take as much, or as little time as we’d like. The project is intended to be enjoyable and not stressful, and in my experience the students enjoy the read aloud component as much as the connections.

This lesson is designed to engage students through reader's theater during the guided reading lesson. Students can practice fluency using an alternative format.

Students will learn how to do basic research on animals that they have read about in a Jan Brett book.
