Pathways for Hexbugs

Students will be grouped into teams. Then each team will create a pathway for their Hexbug to travel. The Hexbug path should be 5 feet from beginning to end and must include two curves, a hill, one bridge and one tunnel. The Hexbug must travel from the beginning to the end without any assistance. Each team will have a timer and will have 20 minutes to design the quickest path they can for their Hexbug.  After the first race teams will have 5 minutes to talk about changes they can make and 5 minutes to make the changes. There will be one final race to see if a different team is able to win.

Friction Fighter Design Project

Students will work in groups to design a wheel-less vehicle that will be sent across different surfaces to test what friction does to materials. The goal of the build will be to make a vehicle that will move as quickly as possible over different surfaces. By using different types of surfaces the student will have to test and decide which building materials are best to cause the best movement.

How strong is your angle?

Students will use everyday craft items to build a simple angle based bridge ( swing set design ) Once bridges are built they will test their strength by placing weighted objects most likely gram weights or something that is a uniform weight on the bridge until it fails.  Or they could test by levels of weight.  10grams, 20 grams etc.

Alligator Angles

Students will use Lego WeDo kits or any other building kit such as k’nex, or geomags or craft materials to build the alligator or alligator mouth and then use a protractor to measure the angle of the mouth opening. Connecting math and the everyday world through the use of building an object to incorporate angle measurements.   As an extension of learning students will then attempt to vary the measurement by adjusting the bands or speed of the motor if using wedo or programmable build kits or non-robotic version by adjusting the hinge of the mouth. Students should attempt to alter the build in efforts to change the angle.

Weather Adaptations Design Challenge

Students will listen to a reading of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs by Judi Barrett.  This book is accessible via NC Kids Digital Library. After the read aloud, students will have the opportunity to engage in The Engineering Design Process to design a prototype/model of a hat or clothing to show how people might adapt to the unusual weather conditions as depicted in the story.  Students will present their design/prototypes and explain how the designs help people adapt to weather conditions, per the NC Kindergarten Social Studies Standards.

Fire!, Fire!, Fire!: The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton

After reading the novel, “The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton, students will follow the engineering design process to build  fire truck vehicles that will transport water from a starting line, 20 feet, to a finish line to put the “fire” out.  The students' fire trucks will be powered by a Sphero robot and driven using the Sphero app. Students will work in groups of 3-4.  Students will be supplied with a 3 oz cup to represent a fire bucket and a 16 oz cup to represent the fire.  The cup that represents fire will have a high water mark drawn on it and students must fill their cup to the mark to successfully complete the challenge.

Fairy Gardens

Students will work independently or in small groups to plan a fairy garden for the K/1 students at the school. They will examine the school yard for the best location for a fairy garden; measure to determine how large of an area we can use and then build/create all the items for the fairy garden using recycled or inexpensive materials.

Piracy In North Carolina: Classroom Museum

Students will work or in learning teams to design and build a cardboard ship bow using Makedo tools to transform their desk or a copy paper box into a pirate ship for the classroom museum. Students will research historic North Carolina pirates including Blackbeard using multiple print and digital texts to prepare a written entry for their exhibit.Family and other classes will be invited to view the museum.  Students will share their experience with the Design and Engineering Process through class discussion and by publishing a digital record of the DEP on Seesaw.

Sound Proof Room

Students work in groups of 2 to create a sound room out of a collection of materials provided by the teacher and then selected by the students. Students will test their sound rooms periodically to determine if their structure has the ability to dampen or even completely eliminate a tone, or ringtone emitted from a cell phone that is turned to max. The goal is for students to rearrange and recombine materials until they have achieved sound cancellation, dampening the waves emitted from the cell phone to a degree that the tone is inaudible. The efficacy of the sound rooms will be checked by a decibel meter on an iPad or Android device (free app easily acquired in an app store). Students will check the decibel reading before their structure is placed over top of the cell phone and then after - comparing the drop in decibels. They will track their results on a document as they hopefully observe the efficiency of their structure improving over time and with each test. One important constraint, the students are limited by a budget. The materials will be “purchased” from an in class store utilizing “real world” pricing.
