Wilkes O

Next Steps

Consider the why, what, who, when & how of GoOpenNC, and determine what next step(s) you plan to take.

District: Wilkes

Team: Anna Lankford, Donna Cotton, Julie Triplett

Critical Path

Why?

Consider: Why is OER a value-add to our district and teams?

Why will framing be an important component of successful engagement?

Discussion/Notes:

Will provide a resource for teachers.  It is free to use.  It will be a key tool in personalized learning.  It is specific to North Carolina educators.  Teachers are already using OER this platform will help ensure the quality of materials.

We always have to start with why.  Empowering all learners to reach their greatest potential.  It continues to build the common language of our teaching and learning framework of what high quality teaching practices should look like.

Action Items:

We will need to make decisions about how we will begin presenting this to a select group of teachers and administrations and framing our why during these presentations.

What

Consider: Do I need to learn more about OER, OEP, and/or open licensing?

Yes, our district will need information about OER, copyright, fair use, intellectual property, etc.

Would be helpful to me if I can spend more time learning about the features and functionality of the microsite?

Yes, we will  need time working with the template to upload new materials and remixing resources.

In my district/school, we have created openly-licensed content that could be added to the microsite.  Do I need to consider the process for making this happen?

We have pacing guides and unit plans, but those are not ready to be added to the site.  We will need to refine and tweak these materials first.

Discussion/Notes:

We will need to create a training plan to gradually roll out this resource in small manageable pieces to teachers who are ready to begin this work.

Action Items:

Create an implementation plan for beginning training for administrators and a select group of teachers.

Who?

Consider: I know there are OER champions already in my district/school. How can I best connect with them to discuss GoOpenNC?

We plan to target our DLI grant teachers OpenNC training.

How can I best determine other instructional leaders in my district/school who can join me as thought partners as we investigate OER/OEP?

We will brainstorm high flyers with content and curriculum knowledge.

Discussion/Notes:

We will work with our DLI grant teachers and DLFs to begin implementation along with our administrators.

Action Items:

Introductory training for our administrators will be key.  Our DLFs will attend the May training in Wilkes for OpenNC.  We will begin working with our DLI grant teachers in 19-20 to start using and vetting OpenNC resources in our district.

When?

Consider: When are there opportunities for teachers and instructional leaders to engage in professional learning related to OER?

PLCs for teachers, content meetings for teachers, staff meetings at schools, and monthly principals meetings.

When the district/school reviews and selects instructional materials, can we could consider OER and how those materials can be utilized?

Yes, we can highlight exceptional lessons during PLCs and content meetings to showcase available resources.

Discussion/Notes:

Implementation will begin small with a select group of teachers and will phase in training and professional development.

Action Items:

Create a training and implementation timeline for phasing in training for OpenNC resources.

How?

Consider: I need to spend time considering how teachers in my district/school are currently selecting instructional materials, and what supports they need to effectively select high quality, standards aligned resources.

How can we best support teachers as they find, vet, use, and create OER.   By providing professional development to build their capacity and understanding of OpenNC and OER resources.  We can also use the vetting template provided in today's training as applicable.

Are there opportunities for teachers to curate and align OER to standards?  Moving forward there may be the opportunity to build time for this into PLCs, data teams, content meetings, trainings, etc.

Discussion/Notes:

We will need more time to plan the most appropriate method to rollout OpenNC as a resource and phase in training based on teacher readiness.

Action Items:

Create an implementation plan for phasing in this resource.
