Literature Circle Discussion Questions

Use these literature circle question stems for small group discussions of books. When students complete the literature circle discussion, they reflect on their participation as well as provide feedback about their group members using these reflection questions. These question stems and reflection questions could also be used for a Socratic Seminar.

Modification for lower elementary school: Have students do a book club. You can write the question stems on sentence starters so that each student can have one in front of them in order to participate actively and productively in conversations.

2nd Modification for elementary students: Give each student a different color small post-it and have them write a P on one, Q on another and C on the last one. As you are reading a section of the story, have them come up with one P-Problem, one Q -Question, and one C- Connection and keep a chart for them to add it to for each section of chapters (1-3). Then, Go over their post-its before the next day's reading to review and discuss what happened and keep them on track.
