Hurricane Tracking and Formation Activity - Analyze 1 Storm

Following the Analysis Questions: Take this lesson the next step by looking at Hurricane conditions before, during and well after landfall.

Steps:
Go back to the 3 bars on the right and click these additional columns: name to add this to the data table.

Now look at the map and pick one of the storms that made US landfall during 2005.  Find the Name of that storm by clicking on either the line or plotted circle to get a pop-up window.  In the pop-up window, click the -Zoom to (this zooms you in on that particular storm).

Follow the hurricane track to a circle that is still over water, but near the coast.  Record the wind speed and pressure for that location on the track.

Now find the first data point on the track that is over land - record the wind speed and pressure for this location on the track.

Follow the track and check the conditions until you find a data point that has the category designation of TS (Tropical Storm) - record the wind speed and pressure for this location on the track.  Describe where the storm is when it is finally a tropical storm again (is it over land?, is it over warm or cooler water?)

Assessment: Write a brief analysis of the conditions of the storm (wind speed and pressure) comparing these 3 data points for this particular storm.  Include what factors contributed to the change in conditions.

Additional Research could incorporate looking for primary source descriptions of the storms impact on the communities in the track.
