Physics in Motion
PBL - Analyzing Human Motion
Day 1- In groups of 4, students will brainstorm on the difference between distance and displacement. Students will be provided with an irregular object (eraser, rock, pencil, etc), graduated cylinder, beaker or cup of water, and a bouncy ball. Students are to a) determine the volume of the irregular object and of the ball b) see which one goes the further when rolled, the irregular object or the ball.
Reflection 1: using examples from the exploration today, compare and contrast distance and displacement (may write a paragraph, create a t-chart, make a Venn Diagram)
Day 2 - By drawing their route from house to school using scale, directions and landmarks students will demonstrate displacement and distance. They will discuss other possible routes that they can take in going to school (this will lead to differentiating distance and displacement). They have to discuss the possible means of transportation or actions that they can do to be in school on time (here the students will discuss qualitatively the differences in speeds of objects- which is faster? Car? Bus? Bike? ). On their way to school, they will predict the possible things (ramps, hills) that can speed up, slow down or change the direction of their motion (facilitating discussions on speed, velocity and understand the ways to show acceleration).
Reflection 2: Which mode of transportation is best for traveling to school? What objects along the way can cause transpiration to speed up, slow down, or change direction? Do these objects make your trip to school shorter or longer?
Day 3- Video Making
Students will make a 5- min video showing different clips of them doing different kinds of motion. They should be able to show clips of speeding up, slowing down and change in direction . Quantitative descriptions are required. They have to present their work to class through google slides, PowerPoint, or YouTube posts.
