George is having a hard time solving division problems, and he has asked you for his help.  Here is George’s strategy:

485 ÷ 4 = ?

4 ÷ 4 = 1

8 ÷ 4 = 2

5 ÷ 4 = 1 remainder 1

1 + 2 + 1 = 4

484 ÷ 4 = 4 r 1

 What is George doing wrong?  Explain how George can fix his strategy so that it works.  Why does this strategy work?
