This task uses music notes to develop a deeper understanding of composing and decomposing fractions.  Students will discover that music notes actually represent fractional parts of measures of music.  Students will apply this understanding to create their own music arrangements, using mathematics to support the accuracy of their creations.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Use video and music to discover the ancient Middle Eastern stringed instrument, the oud.
Discuss the history of the instrument and compare different styles of playing. Learn to identify
and repeat the different rhythms.

Students explore the music of the Pacific islands of Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga, including their instruments and cultural similarities. Practice musical notation by transcribing rhythmic and melodic contour. Identify the instruments used and their significance.

In this lesson, students learn to use different types of pies to recognize and notate rhythms in standard notation. Students participate in rhythm dictation trough use of popsicle sticks to illustrate rhythms clapped. Further, students will use standard notation to notate simple melodic patterns that have been performed for melodic dictation.

Simple yet adaptable activity to teach or review rhyhtm patterns in a clock format. Use the provided rhythms or create your own; this can also be turned into a composition activity.

Students understand the relationships between whole, halves, and quarters, and internalize and the relationships between the parts through interaction with musical notation and rhythm. Additionally, students will apply abstract thinking skills to process, read and create musical notations and compositions using their knowledge of fractions.

Students will be introduced to the three pieces of Aboriginal music from the Northern Territoy of Australia. They will perform rhythms with body percussion and on rhythm instruments. They will listen for particular melodic patterns and show them through drawing as well as singing on neutral syllables. They will act out the story of the song.
