For this online interactive, students select the option which shows numbers ordered from largest to smallest. Students have the option to skip the problem or check their answer before submitting it. Their progress is tracked and shown above each problem.

This task highlights a slightly different aspect of place value as it relates to decimal notation. More than simply being comfortable with decimal notation, the point is for students to be able to move fluidly between and among the different ways that a single value can be represented and to understand the relative size of the numbers in each place.

This task asks pairs of students to plan for a weekend camping trip.  Students will need to evaluate their needs, select items to pack, and ensure that each person’s load does not exceed 30 pounds.  In order to determine the total weight of supplies, students will need to compare decimals, convert fractions to decimals, and operate on decimal fractions.  In addition, students will do some weight conversions between ounces and pounds.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
