Students learn about good citizens. They learn about examples of good citizens in the local community, the state, and the nation, including veterans and how we honor veterans as a nation. Students also use geographic tools to learn about places veterans served and use timelines to learn more about veterans and patriotic holidays.

Students will analyze images of tools that were used on rice plantations to determine each tool's purpose. These objects can tell us a great deal about slavery and the lives of the slaves who worked on rice plantations.

Students can enjoy exploring the history of the women's suffrage movement and women's role in civic life today. Focused on actively reading Mama Went to Jail for the Vote, a historical fiction picture book about the women's suffrage movement, this module also includes links to a hands-on activity, field trip, object-based learning experience, and technology exploration.

Students will review one or more compositions by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., identify meaningful words and phrases, and create word art using the Wordle Web site.
