Heating Up: Color and Wavelength

Heating Up: Color and Wavelength

Rating
0.0 stars

Students will investigate how color and wavelength are related to temperature of an object. The first application shows a robot made of extremely tough material being heated with a nuclear-powered blow torch, and tracks the changes in the spectrum of the robot as temperature increases. The next application repeats the experimental setup, this time tracking the changes in peak wavelength as the robot's temperature increases. Then students are led through the application of these concepts to make analyses about the connection between star temperatures and colors. Students are presented with challenge questions at the end of the activity.
