    Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood

    Overview

    This is an activity to check for understanding of the concept of story elements. Do the students know and understand the terms? Can he or she determine the story elements of a particular story?

    35 minutes 1 Library lesson

    Story elements are touched on almost weekly in the library. This activity is a check for understanding that students can do individually, in pairs or small groups.  This activity would happen after several lessons have been covered on story elements.

     

    1) Review the vocabulary of story elements using a "story hand."

    • Character
     Person or animal in the story.
    Main Character The most important character in the story.
    • Setting
     The location and time that the story takes place.
    • Plot
     
      
      
      
      

    2) The teacher should share the history of the Acadians with the students using a map or Google Earth. Mike Artell has included this information in the books.

    3) The teacher should explain the dialect that will be used in the story. The teacher will want to practice reading this one before sharing with students.

    4) The teacher will need to work through some of the French words that will appear in the story. Teaching the meaning and pronunciation.
