This guide was created in response to the AP Language and Composition exam conditions for 2020. The objective of this document is to give students the best possible opportunity for pre-writing their essay responses. The online format of the exam will not allow for annotations directly on the text, a foreign concept to the way they have been taught all year, and the new exam guidelines allow for open-note testing, a benefit to be used wisely.

By completing this guide in lieu of traditional annotations, a student can be fully prepared with laser-focused notes to write not only an excellent Rhetorical Analysis (Q2) essay, but also to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the text through consistent, complex thought and a well-defined line of reasoning.

My students have observed that 15-20 minutes of time invested in focused pre-writing allows them to complete the actual essay in approximately 20 minutes. This will afford them another 5 minutes to revise and refine before uploading their final submissions.

DISCLAIMER: This document has been designed and created by me for my specific students in mind. I am sharing it on this platform for any other teachers who might find it helpful. My students understand how to apply the information gathered in each section based on the lessons we have completed together in class. I may update this product to include some of those resources if I have the time, but it seems unlikely at this point. Instead, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to meet up on Zoom for a chat.
