Overview

 

Students will use collected data from the weather station to describe and predict weather patterns. They will then create a weather report/forecast based on their data and predictions using the Ipad pretending to be the meteorologist.

Project SummaryStudents will use collected data from the weather station to describe and predict weather patterns. They will then create a weather report/forecast based on their data and predictions using the Ipad pretending to be the meteorologist.

Project Outline 

AskHave you thought about different ways you can track weather to find a pattern? Can you use these patterns to create a prediction in what the weather might do?
ImagineHow do meteorologists use weather predictions to create a weather forecast?How do meteorologists track weather data to create a weather report for the viewers?
PlanStudents will work in teams of 3-4. Teams will  be in charge of one of the following ( temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, pressure) Each team will be in charge of gathering and tracking their specified weather data using the weather station information available daily for at least a week, once per class.Teams will use their data gathered to complete the following: 1.Predict the weather pattern for the next several days 2. Create a weather forecast/prediction based on the weather pattern data    gathered
CreateUsing the data gathered from the weather station, each team will make predictions of future weather patterns. Each team will have a news crew and meteorologist who will explain the data gathered from the weather station  Students will have the opportunity to rehearse before videoingFinal video should include the following:
  • What data your team tracked
  • Units/measurement used to track your teams data
  • Weather Predictions/forecast for the next 5 days (5 day forecast)
  • A brief explanation to your viewers how you came to you predictions
ImproveUsing the ipads and green screens, each team will create a weather report after they have analyzed their data. Each team will watch examples of how a weather report should be conducted to model a professional weather report.
Closure / Student Reflections
  1. Students should complete a data chart tracking their weather data for their team before beginning the video creation.
  2. Students can watch each others’ videos using a collaborative source such as padlet or flipgrid.
Possible Modifications / ExtensionsModifications for low level learners:
  1. These students could be assigned wind direction, rainfall or wind speed to create their prediction/forecast on.
Modifications for high level learners:
  1. These students could assigned solar radiation and UV reading to monitor and report on

  1. Possible extension could be to have students graph  data that was tracked
