Introduce yourself (Answer Required, from Webinar 1)

by Joanna Schimizzi 5 years, 5 months ago

Introductions - What is your name, content expertise, current role in education? If you could collaborate more with a specific set of educators, especially via this platform who would it be?

Joanna Schimizzi 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi -- Joanna Schimizzi (ska-meet-zee).

I am a Biology and Dance Education "expert" :) I taught Bio, AP Bio, Extended Bio, etc for years in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and now I teach for the OCS program as part of NC Virtual Public Schools.

I would love to collaborate more with folks interested in social emotional learning and culturally relevant pedagogy. I'd love to start remixing materials to be more culturally relevant and truly address the whole learner.

Mollee Holloman 5 years, 5 months ago

YES to more with culturally relevant pedagogy! My sister wrote her dissertation on CRP and I learned SO much by reading and editing for her - I can't wait to see what you remix and be inspired to help do the same :)

SAMANTHA ROUSE 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Joanna! I just love the OCS program.  I'm over in English.  Glad to make these connections with everyone.

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

I love the idea of collaborating on social emotional learning!   This kind of thing never crossed my mind as a younger teacher.  However, now that I am the mother of 4 young children, I am just beginning to learn how much children can benefit from having more instruction in this area!

RENEE MITCHELL 5 years, 4 months ago

I totally agree with you, Melissa! Having children of your own can change your perspective.

It did for me as well.  Surprises me to think about how long it took for education to catch up with this need.

ASHLEY GREENE 5 years, 4 months ago

Would LOVE to do more collaboration in this area. Our school dynamics have changed so much in the last ten years, and more of this is needed!

LANDRA CARTWRIGHT 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello, I am Landra Cartwright and I am an Instructional Technology Facilitator (ITF) in a middle school.  My job description is changing from fixing and delivering technology training to collaborating and coaching.  I am interested in PBL in all content areas.

GAIL HOLMES 5 years, 4 months ago

Joanna,

Culturally relevant pedagogy sounds like a great group to start.  Often teachers do not think about the problems with non readers and relunctant learners in middle school could be an extension of poor teaching in elementary schools.  We can not play the blame game with elementary schools; however it only takes one teacher.  Reading the book, "Culturally Responsible teaching and the brain" by Zaretta L. Hammond, you quickly learn that her research shows that culturally  responsibe teaching should not be just a tool to motivate learners, but for accelerating student learning. You must get rid of the worksheets and teach students how to problem solve and create.  When taught properly, it can work to close achievement gaps by preparing students for rigorous learning and higher order thinking.  Most importantly, it can prepare them to become contributing members of society.

LISA MONTGOMERY 5 years, 5 months ago

HI! I am Lisa Montgomery. I have taught elementary, middle school ELA and Social Studies. I have also taught high school English. My certifications are K-6, 6-9 social studies, 6-9 ELA, K-12 AIG, K-12 ESL and Instructional Technology. I serve in Gaston County Schools where my husband and our children are both proud graduates! I would also love to collaborate on social-emotional learning and culturally relevant pedagogy! I can't wait to start!

Jennifer Barbour 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello!  My name is Jen Barbour.  My content expertise would be elementary school math, and I am currently an AIG teacher in Wake County Public Schools.  I would love to collaborate with other AIG or gifted/talented elementary school teachers in order to find quality, standards-aligned units/activities for gifted students.

Sheronica Sharp 5 years, 5 months ago

Greetings everyone!  I am Sheronica Sharp and I am a Digital Literacy Coach in Edgecombe County.  This is my second year teaching STREAM at a K-5 elementary school.  I would say my expertise would be middle school math.  I was a middle school math teacher for nine years.  If I could collaborate more with aspecific set of educators it would probably math, STEM, and science teachers.

SAMANTHA ROUSE 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Sheronica! I am glad this group will give me chance to collaborate with you.  I am a K-5 STEM teacher in Lenoir County.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Sheronica & Samantha! Glad to collaborate as well. I've been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. BTW, you can find many of the STEM activities I did over the 11 years I taught on https://www.oercommons.org/ (I'm in the process of linking them to the GoOpenNC platform). Whle they are primarily focused on the HS level, many can be adapted and remixed for earlier grades as well.

Sheronica Sharp 5 years, 5 months ago

Thank you so much Ben!  I will certainly check the website out.  I look forward to collaborating with you!

ASHLEY GREENE 5 years, 4 months ago

Oh, this is great! I cannot wait to check these out! Thank you!

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Sheronica!  Like Ben, I am also one of the super community members.  I have been teaching middle school math for 19 years (6th, 7th, 8th, and Math 1), so I would love to collaborate and draw from each other's expertise!

Nicole Smith 5 years, 5 months ago

Sheronica, Ben and Joy--I teach high school Math. I can't wait to collaborate with you all!

LINDA NELSON 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! I'm Linda Nelson. I moved to NC from MI in 2004. I got tired of the snow and ice from October until May.

I am certified in Elementary Ed, ELA, and Math. (Weird combo, I know!) I am also a Reading Specialist. I just completed my 20th year of teaching.

I would love to collaborate with others that are interested in integrating PBL into their classroom.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Linda! I've been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way - especially to collaborate regarding PBL and Math. Cheers!

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Linda!  I am also one of the super community members and have similar certifications.  I am certified middle school and licensed in Math and ELA!  Weirdo's unite!!  I use an inquiry based approach in my classes, which can be similar to PBL.  I look forward to collaborating!

James Bello 5 years, 5 months ago

PBL is definitely an area of interest for me. I have a little experience with it but very minimal.

Mollee Holloman 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi I'm Mollee Holloman - librarian at Manteo Elementary school. My role in the 7 years I've been in education has been Librarian so my content expertise is centered around being familiar with K-5 curriculum and supporting teachers in accessing relevant materials, supporting literacy and digital learning in my building, and serving as  additional support to specialists like AIG, EC, ESL, etc. I have experience doing professional development locally and across the state around digital teaching and learning, so I'm excited to dig deeper into #GoOpenNC, allowing me to personally grow, and to share with colleagues & my PLN! My ideal collaboration would be with a team of educators that represents vertical & cross-content learning - too often, teachers I work with see only through the lens of their grade level & as a "big picture" educator, working with all 6 elementary grade levels, I recognize the potential for amazing collaboration across teams if we got them together more frequently! This site may truly help build those bridges as educators see how materials can be "remixed" for various grades/content areas.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Mollee! Your ideal collaboration is spot on! I've had the good fortune of being able to visit dozens of truly innovative schools here in the US and elsewhere over this past year and one of the common threads is a cultre of collaboration based on trusting relationships between peers, as well as with students. That's why I'm amped about this work. The GoOpen movement can catalize deep, professional collaboration between educators, allowing them to adapt ideas and resources to better meet the local needs of every student. Keep up the good work!

Melissa Edgerton 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Mollee! I am Melissa Edgerton. I am one of the Super Community Members. Manteo is so fortunate to have a librarian with your desire to learn and find tools which will enrich your teachers' instructional practice. I really look forward to collaborating!

ASHLEY GREENE 5 years, 4 months ago

Hi! I am also an elementary librarian! I share your same ideal for collaboration. I am moving from a full flex schedule to a partial flex, and I really want to expand that lens that teachers see through to show them the amount of collaboration that can truly take place in a school! I am excited about showing them some of these resources!

JENNIFER MITCHELL 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! I am Jen Mitchell. This is year seventeen of teaching. I taught two years in middle school, and the rest at the high school level. I teach Honors Advanced Inquiry, Honors English III, and AP Language and Composition currently. I have taught grades 7, 9, 10, 11, and 12 though. I have been working with curriculum development for the last eight years, and I really enjoy this area. I would love to work with others in integrating more writing into the classroom. Writing is such an essential skill, and I would like to further develop its implementation into the classroom.

PATRICIA COLDREN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Jennifer! I'm participating as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way.  I am super interested in your desire to integrate writing.  Working PreK-12 I see such a need for this discussion and for resouces for our teachers!

Tesha Isler 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Tesha Isler.  I am an Elementary Academic Coach at LJ Bell in Richmond County. My expertise is K-5 Reading and Math with a love for 3rd-5th grade curriculum.  I am the CEO of Believe I Can Learn.  Believe I Can learn is a consultant company focused on helping any school with differentiation, curricular content, and instructional strategies with a special emphasis on economically disadvantaged students.  I have served as a 5th grade teacher for 5 years, an academic coach for 11 years and 1 year as an assistant principal.  My heart is instructional leadership and as an instructional coach I am heavily involved with instruction, curriculum resources, and professional learning communities for all grade levels. I would love to collaborate with instructional coaches and 3rd-5th grade teachers using this platform.

BRANDY METZGER 5 years, 5 months ago

I am an elementary instructional coach as well. Looking forward to this collaboration!

Christina Speiser 5 years, 5 months ago

It is so great to see everyone so ready to collaborate. I've learned so much from other teachers over the years. I am excited to collaborate with everyone as well!

Christina Speiser 5 years, 5 months ago

I'm also one of the super community members, so please let me know if I can do anything to assist with collaboration. This will be such a great way to start off the new school year!

SAMANTHA ROUSE 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone!  I'm Samantha Rouse.  I am currently a K-5 STEM teacher in Lenoir County.  I also teach with NCVPS as part of their OCS program.  My certifications are 9-12 English, Curriculum Specialist, Principal, and K-6.  I joke that the only grade I haven't taught is 7th (but I was the middle school AP in a K-8 school for a year)!  I started my career in education as a high school English teacher, but my journey has been crazy and varied.

I would love to connect with other primary and elementary STEM educators.  I am currently the only K-5 STEM teacher in my district (there are 2 middle school STEM teachers), and it gets pretty lonely sometimes.

Amber Batchelor 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Samantha!!

I am from Lenoir County as well. I went to NL and taught there for 5 years.

SAMANTHA ROUSE 5 years, 5 months ago

Cool! I actually grew up in Carteret County and ended up in Duplin.  I still live in Duplin (literally 1 mile inside the line), and my 3 sons attend BF Grady.  I teach at Northwest in Kinston, out by the mall and country club.

SAMANTHA ROUSE 5 years, 5 months ago

It is so much fun!  This will be my second year in this role.  I actually do small group interventions in reading and math all morning, then teach STEM in the afternoon.  It's been fun to write my own curriculum, pulling from the NCSCOS for math, science, and technology to help out the classroom teachers in our building with covering tough standards.

Nothing beats a group of kinders with big imaginations and blocks!

Kimberly Chaiken 5 years, 5 months ago

Yes!  Give my Kinders some blocks and STEM activites and watch them take off with imagination and creativity!

Amber Batchelor 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone

I am Amber Batcheor, and I currently teach at Knightdale High School in Wake County. I teach 9th grade, but I have taught 9th-11th. I am certified in 9-12 Mathematics, SPED General Curriculum, and Instruction/Curriculum for Mathematics. This year I am only teaching intro to high school math/foundations of math 1 all year. My students are coming in with very low math skills so it will be my job to review basics from middle school, and get them ready for math 1 next year. I have used all kinds of curriculum from MVP, all things algera, creative clark math, and anything I find on google. I really want to collaborate with other high school math teachers especially those in 9th grade who teach the low performing students. We need to best be able to teach those who come to us struggling with those skills to become successful in high school. What resources are best for those especially for students who might be labeled as LD, ELL, and ADHD because those students are the ones who need us the most.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Amber! I've been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. I spent 11 years teaching physics and math at a PBL school and a significant number of my students were in the same boat in terms of starting with a weak math foundation. I (and my peers) were able to make huge strides with projects that allowed students to master content through projects that were related to real-world applications they cared about (f course, starting with a strong foundation of relationship building through advisory, etc.). Glad to collaborate with you on how you can use this work to adapt a similar approach for your learning community. BTW, you can find many of the STEM activities I did over the 11 years I taught on https://www.oercommons.org/ (I'm in the process of linking them to the GoOpenNC platform). Cheers!

Amber Batchelor 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Ben!

That sounds awesome! I want to be able to do more PBL eventually. I haven't had training on it yet due to only being trained with MVP for Wake county. We weren't expected to do them since we had the curriculum. I do want to do some projects like that though since i have the freedom now with my teacher made classes all year. I have a foundational curriculum I will use in the fall for intro, and can do what I want in spring for foundations of math 1. I will look at your projects, but anything you can advise me on would be great!!

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Glad to help, Amber! PBL is a true game changer when it's done with fidelity...but it can also be "miseducative" if not done well (hands on, minds off). Here is the best resource out there for PBL: https://www.pblworks.org/ - of course I'm biased because I'm part of their National Faculty! ;) Glad to help in any way I can!

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Amber!

So cool to see you here in the #GoOpenNC academy :)    I didn't realize you were in Wake County!  I am too (but over in the Apex/Holly Springs area).   It's so great that you are going into the school year with your students' needs at the forefront of your mind :)

I'll share an activity you may want to work in to help hone those skills for students working with positive and negative numbers (this was something I came up with while working at Holly Springs High School just before I started teaching online).  It's great just after you have reviewed adding positives and negatives.

I bought a box of Fruit Loops to represent negative numbers, and a box of cocoa puffs for the positives.   And I would go around and give everyone a napkin and put a scoop of each on their desk.

Then, I'd write up on the board something like -4 +5 and show them how to model that expression with the cereal (4 fruit loops and 5 cocoa puffs).  Then, to get the solution I told them to "fill the hole" of any fruit loop they could with a cocoa puff and if they made a pair they could eat it.  What ever was left was their answer.

I'd explain how one positive will cancel with one negative (a zero pair) and we would do a few more like 6 + (-2) etc.

Eventually I'd add in subtraction, but start off easy with something they could model with the cereal (like -5 - (-2)).  They would start with 5 fruit loops and then they had to take away 2 fruit loops.  So the answer would be what was left (3 fruit loops or -3).

They'd of course say that was not as fun because they didn't get to eat anything :p  So I'd show them how to change the subtracton to addition and incorporate cocoa puffs and still get the same answer (and they got to eat again :p).

We'd then practice a few more subtraction problems and practice changing it to addition first.

Anyway, this was a long post!  Sorry about that!  But I hope it might be something you can use :)

Amber Batchelor 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Melissa! I didn't know you were in wake county either. I live off of capital but teach in knightdale. I love this activity! I might have to "steal" it during august before I go on maternity leave!! We start with rates, but I can easily slip this into my warm up/number theory at the beginning of a lesson.

Julie Joyner 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Amber. I'm your Super Community Member - meaning you can let me know if you have further questions or just simply want to become more engaged in the process here. I am a middle school ELA teacher in Wilson County, and I live just outside of Wake County, in Nash. I hope GoOpenNC will be a great resource for you!

Nicole Smith 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Amber,

I teach Math 2 and Foundations of Math 2. I can definitely see where you're coming from with students who can be seriously lacking in prior skills. I can't wait to work together!

My email is nicole.smith@kcs.k12.nc.us

CARLA JOYNER 5 years, 4 months ago

Hi Amber,

I am a secondary Math Coach for Durham Public Schools. One of my mentees, Tania Greene, is a math teacher at Knightdale as well. I hope that the resources that we review will help benefit not just your SLD students but all your students. What I have discovered with Foundations of Math 1/Math 1 students, you have to introduce them to the Math 1 curriculum sooner than later...reviewing middle school concepts for a semester has not proven to be productive at our school. I know you might not have total control on the curriculum piece but we try to introduce them to the type of functions they will encounter in Math 1 1st semester and then dig deeper 2nd semester. Good luck with this school year.

Dr. J

Amber Batchelor 5 years, 4 months ago

Hi Carla!! Love Tania :) she is great. Such a small world. Our intro curriculum starts with basic number review with base 10 and rates, and then progresses into what is similar to pre-algebra I think. We do cover linear functions quite a bit in this course. I will then dive deeper into all three main functions I think next semester. That time I have more flexibility to touch on big concepts.

Chavonda Brown 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello Everyone,

I am Chavonda Brown with nine years of experience in Mathematics.  I am currently teaching both middle school math (6-8), NC Math I, and SREB Math at an alternative school in Scotland County.  I would love to collaborate with math teachers involved in STEM or AIG.

Danielle Flores 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Chavonda! I would love to collaborate about STEM and AIG as well. I would really like to learn how to better support our AIG group at my school! Scotland county is a rural county, right? Or am I way off??

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Chavonda & Danielle! Glad to also collaborate on STEM/math items as well...I've been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. I spent 11 years teaching physics and math at a PBL school and you can find many of the STEM activities I did over the years here: https://www.oercommons.org/ (I'm in the process of linking them to the GoOpenNC platform). Cheers!

Chavonda Brown 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Danielle,

Yes, Scotland County is a rural county.  I have a 30 minute commute from my county to Scotland because Scotland has an alternative school.  I would like to provide opportunties such as STEM to at risk students.

Melissa Edgerton 5 years, 5 months ago

Hii Chavonda! I am one of the Super Community members. All of my experience is in elementary, but I always look forward to learning from middle school teachers how we can better prepare our students for their academic future. I am looking forward to collaborating with you through this course.

ALICIA RAY 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey friends! I'm Alicia Ray. I taught elementary school for 10 years before moving to middle school a few years ago. I'm currently a digital learning coach and media coordinator at a STEM magnet middle school in Surry County. I'd love to collaborate more with media folks across the state.

Jessica Fariss 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone!

I am Jessica Fariss.  I just finished my 1st year as an instructional coach in an elementary school in Johnston County Public Schools.  Prior to this, I taught 5th grade for 9 years and 3rd grade for 3 years.  I have a graduate degree in Special Education - Learning Disabilities.

Our school is focusing on our core reading instruction and on social emotional learning this year (I work in a Title 1 school, so many of our students come to school with serious situations going on at home), so I would love to collaborate about those things.  I'm also still learning how to be an instructional coach, so I would be interested in collaborating with other coaches too!

BRANDY METZGER 5 years, 5 months ago

I am going into my 3rd year as an elementary instructional coach. I look forward to this collaboration!

Rebecca Welch 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Jessica!

Social Emotional Learning is a hot topic and high focus where I am right now.  Maybe we could collaborate a little around integrating social emotional learning into all classrooms.  We all could use more learning.  I don't have elementary experience, but I do know that SEL is imperative for ALL kids.

Danielle Flores 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!

My name is Danielle Flores. I am currently a Math Instructional Coach at NL Dillard Middle School in Caswell County.  A small, rural county near the Virginia line. I also teach NC Math Two for NCVPS.  My content expertise is Mathematics, I have taught both high school and middle school.  I would like to learn more about how materials can meet all types of learners, including those that are advanced and those that need more assistance. I am looking forward to this experience!

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Danielle!  I am right next door in Rockingham County!  I teach 9th grade math and Math 1 at Rock Middle.  I'm looking forward to working together!

ANGELA BROWN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Danielle,

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet your principal and assistant principals at a Seminar in Wilmington, two weeks ago. I taught for 19 years with Rockingham County Schools.

Renee Golz 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  My name is Renee Golz.  My greatest expertise is in literacy instruction and I have found that teaching first graders to read was nothing short of magical!  I have served as a teacher, literacy facilitator, assistant principal, and am currently the Director of Beginning Teacher Development & Support for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
If I could collaborate with a more specific set of educators, especially via this platform, I would be interested in those dedicated to service to beginning teachers with a focus on social/emotional learning, school wide enrichment model, and use of instructional technology for primary learners.

Adrian Earl 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! My name is Adrian Earl and I am an Elementary Education Educator. I currently serve at a charter school located in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. I would like to believe that my content expertise is all subjects K-5 since I have had the privilege of teaching all core subjects in these grade levels for over 15 years. However, if I had to narrow down my focus, my skill mastery would be in the areas of math, science, and technology. I look forward to using this platform to collaborate with other educators interested STEM, Educational Technology, and College and Career Readiness on multiple levels.

Christina Speiser 5 years, 5 months ago

Wow! You have a great background to add to our collaborative discussions. We are always looking to add STEM to our lessons. I look forward to hearing some of your ideas. I am one of the super community members, so please let me know if I can help with anything throughout this process.

ASHLEY MILLER 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Ashley Miller.  I am a Math 1 teacher in Rowan County but have taught all grades from 6-12 since I began teaching in 2000.  I also have extensive experience with technology.  Our school has shifted to a school of Entrepenurship and Design using CBLs throughout the school.  We are also embarking on co teaching contents to give students a fully integrated education.  I would love to collaborate more with teachers who have experience integrating Science and Math in an authentic way.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Ashley! I've been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. I taught STEM for 11 years at a full PBL school that focused on authentic projects that included having outside mentors for each PBL team (a game changer - especially for students that traditionally struggled with math & science). Anyway, glad to collaborate with you on how you can use this work to adapt a similar approach for your learning community. BTW, you can find many of the STEM activities I did over the years here: https://www.oercommons.org/ (I'm in the process of linking them to the GoOpenNC platform). Cheers!

MARINA BONOMO 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Marina Bonomo. I am a social studies "expert" and currently engaging as a K-5 media coordinator. As such I am working with all grade levels and special teachers in the K-5 world. I would like to work more with AIG, EC, ESL and Kindergarten teachers. I am so excited about this resource as we do need some clarity to the nebulous rights and restrictions of the online world.

Kimberly Chaiken 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Marina~  I'm a Kindergarten techer who would love to learn along with you.

MARINA BONOMO 5 years, 5 months ago

Awesome Kimberly,

I was originally a secondary social studies person, so for me, Kinders are my biggest stretch. I just always like having a kinder buddy to bounce things off of.

MARINA BONOMO 5 years, 5 months ago

That is great Danielle,

I feel like I see all of these students with their classes, but would love to find ways to support them separatly as well.

JENNIFER BRINKLEY 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! I am Jennifer Brinkley.  I teach high school math at North Davidson High School in Lexington, NC.  This will be my 18th year of teaching.  I use to teach Geometry and Geometry Honors before the curriculum changed (I miss Geometry). Hello!  My name is Allison Landry.  My content expertise is K-12 Mathematics, which is very helpful in my current role as Carteret County Public School's Director of Mathematics and Data Analytics. :)  I would like to collaborate with mathematics instructors, as well as professional develop leads.  I am passionate about providing impactful, engaging PD opportunitites without re-inventing the wheel.  There's no need to create one's own PD, especially if the focus is regarding a state initiative or rollout.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Allison! I couldn't agree more! The best PD is often the organic, interaction we have by simply watching, listening, and learning from our peers. That's why I love the GoOpen approach that helps build a culture of deep collaboration between educators - allowing us all to learn from colleagues, offer constructive feedback, and then adapt high quality resources and ideas for our local needs.

NATASHA VON KLINGLER 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! My name is Natasha Von Klingler, and I'm a K-5 Instructional Coach in Franklin County.  I taught 2nd grade and 4th grade before moving into the role of Coach. I would love to collaborate about PBL, culturally relevant ideas, and STEM (I can't choose just one!)

If anyone is interested in connecting on Twitter, my handle is @nvonklingler. Looking forward to learning with all of you!

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Natasha! Just connected with you on Twitter. :) DM me if you would like to chat about STEM & PBL (I taught STEM at a full PBL school for 11 years). Cheers!

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, all! I'm a former engineer who worked for DuPont in locations across the US. before becoming a STEM teacher at Tri-County Early College HS in Murphy, NC for 11 years - a "wall-to-wall" PBL school that did everything it could to blur the lines between education and relevant, real-world learning so that students developed the skills & dispositions needed to thrive in a global, innovation economy. I've done education and teacher advocacy work at the state and national level with BestNC, Hope Street Group, the Gates Foundation, CTQ, ECET2, the NC SMT Center, the NCSU Science House, and the MIT Teaching Systems Lab. I'm currently a National Faculty member for PBLWorks and an Open Ambassador for opensource.com. I left the classroom in June 2018 after co-authoring the book, “Open Up, Education! How Open Way Learning Can Transform Schools” and started a nonprofit that works with educators across the US create the cultural conditions for localized innovation in their own schools. I'm passionate about open source principles and OER and am super stoked that North Carolina is a #GoOpen state! As one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, I'm glad to help in any way I can! Cheers!

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Likewise, Kimberly! Great to work with you again!

Kimberly Chaiken 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Kimberly Chaiken.  I have spent most of teaching life in early childhood as either a teacher and director of Parenting Classes, a Pre-School teacher, a 1st grade teacher but most of my time is where my true love is, Kindergarten.  I currently teach in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a Kindergarten teacher.  I would love to collaborte with others on Personalized Learning.  I am so excited to learn more on this journey with the curriculum review academy!

EMILY POTTER 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Kimberly!  WOOT WOOT Kindergarten!  I teach Kindergarten in Franklin County schools!  Excited to find another lover of Kindergarten in here!

MEGAN LEWIS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! I'm Megan Lewis. I am a math coach at an elementary school in Durham Public Schools. AMY JAMISON 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello Everyone! I am Amy Jamison. I'm so excited to be a part of this statewide review panel! I teach 5th-grade science in Rockingham County. I am about to start my 9th year in the NC public school system. I would love to collaborate with fellow 5th-grade science teachers. Maybe we can review resources together via google hangouts.

I have very little experience with copyright so this will be a growing experience for me. I am not a creator of resources, but rather a hunter and gatherer. I look forward to hunting and gathering in OERNC.

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Amy!   I love your description of yourself as a "hunter and gatherer" :)     I don't teach elementary or science, but I do love your idea of reviewing resources with others via Google hangouts.   I may just "steal" (aka "gather") that idea myself :)

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello Amy Jamison!!  Nice to see another RCS teacher jumping in to make education better!  I'm glad to be working on another project with you!

Nancy Hetrick 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone! My name is Nancy Hetrick and I currently serve as a math teacher and instructional leader for the NCVPS Co-Teaching Program. My background includes many f2f years as a middle & high school math teacher, an instructional facilitator, and a school administrator.

I am thrilled to be collaborating together with educators on resources used to help all learners achieve and grow. Because so many of our OCS students struggle with reading, it would be especially helpful to collaborate with others on ways to add new tools to my toolbox that personalizes learning and engagement for all types of learners in activities that promote skill development and SUCCESS!

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Nancy!  So great to "see" you here in the #GoOpenNC Academy!  I look forward to adding to my toolbox as well!

Martha Levey 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Martha Levey. My undergrad was journalism and I have a master's in elementary ed and a master's in library science. I'm a librarian at a K-3 school in Carteret County. I would love to collaborate with librarians throughout the state who are always looking for new ideas/techniques to promote literacy.

Kristen Fox 5 years, 5 months ago

What is your name, content expertise, current role in education? If you could collaborate more with a specific set of educators, especially via this platform who would it be?

My name is Kristen Fox, and I have taught English I/II in CMS for the past 20 years. I’m dual certified in ESL and LOVE working in the classroom. I would like to make cross-curricular connections to help students see relevance in learning as a whole. Looking forward to working with you all!

Rebecca Welch 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Kristen!!!

It's neat that you are participating in this too!  Maybe I can come to visit you and we can work together real time and in person.  Miss you all over there!

James Bello 5 years, 5 months ago

Cross curricular is an area for me as well. I'm in CMS as well so collaboration would be easy.

LINDA TUGURIAN 5 years, 5 months ago

I am a science curriculum specialist in Durham Public Schools.  My main interest is related to science learning in outdoor settings, but I'd love to collaborate with other science educators more generally.  I've been teaching science and technology for, well, let's just say, more than a few years...

Cinnamon Frame 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Linda, I brought my team to the Regional Science Olympiad you hosted! Good to see you here :)

KIMBERLY MAWHINEY 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Linda, I am a 15 year veteran of High School Science.  I would love to collaborate more with you.  I have been tapped as a "Super Community Member" so let me know if I can help at all.

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Linda!  I am also a super community member, but I am more of a math guru than science.  I look forward to working with you!

Julie Joyner 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello, I'm Julie Joyner. My content expertise is middle school English Language Arts, and I have 13 years experience in the field. I currently teach 7th grade ELA and Social Studies at Elm City Middle School in Wilson County. I would love to collaborate with other middle school teachers who are trying to build a community of readers in their classrooms - a daunting task in the middle grades! I'm eyeing NBPTS certification in Early Adolescence/ELA, so I would also like to connect with other teachers who have been through the certification process or are certifying now and discuss the lessons and strategies that were successful for their board portfolios. As a writer myself, I love developing those skills in my students, and I am available for collaboration or advice on writing lessons. I taught Creative Writing as a local elective for three years, and it was amazing. Our students need writing opportunities!

Joanna Schimizzi 5 years, 5 months ago

Julie -- I'm sure you'll find an amazing group of Middle Grades ELA teachers and resources on the platform. I can't wait for you to engage and help build our community. In terms of NBPTS -- GO FOR IT! You'll love the experience and NC has a wealth of resources (NCDPI, NCAE, Facebook) to support your journey!

MICHELLE MANIS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey there!  I'm Michelle Manis, I've taught pre-K through 3rd grade, Behavior Specialsit and currently MTSS Coordinator.  I would love to see intervention (academic and behavioral) materials as well as social emotional learning materials...what about some coaching materials for our instructional coaches?

Jessica Field 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone!  I'm Jessica Field.  I will be teaching First Grade this upcoming year, but have been an Instructional Coach for the past two years. Prior to that, I taught every grade K-5.  I also work with Western Governors University to prepare pre-service educators to enter the classroom as well.  My certifications are K-6 Elem. Ed, and Reading K-12. I have toyed with the idea of getting my MSA Add-on. I am interested in PBL and combining literacy and science together fluidly.

Christina Speiser 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Jessica,

I have been trying to work PBL units into my lesson plans and I have been working on some ideas over the summer. I love the idea of combining literacy and science. I look forward to hearing your ideas as we move through this process. I am one of the super community members, so feel free to reach out if I can do anything to help with this collaborative effort.

JAMIE SMITH 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  I am Jamie Smith and I am a HS Science content expert who loves bio but can work in any science.  I am currently an instructional coach.  I would love to collaborate with other coaches, at the high school level.  We are few and far in between :)

KIMBERLY MAWHINEY 5 years, 5 months ago

Jamie, I am a High School Science Department Chair teaching Chemistry.  I would love to collaborate with you!

Rebecca Welch 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Jamie!  I am currently serving as somewhat of an interim science specialist until our new one comes on board.  I would love to share your information with that person, as I'm sure they would like support from someone in a similar role.

CHERYL WILLIAMS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi I'm Cheri Williams and I teach in Wilmington. Any other coastal folks out there? (New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick...). I've been teaching Math at the middle school level for 20 years, mostly 8th grade and 8th grade Math 1. I have served as the math coach/department chair at my school for about 8 years, but I am transferring schools this year, so it's a new adventure for me!

I would love to collaborate with other Math 1 middle school teachers, because the content is different in this course due to having to cover both 8th grade and Math 1 standards.

Martha Levey 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Cheri, my name is Martha Levey and I'm one of the "Super Community Members" for this group! Please let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything. I'm in Carteret County (on the coast north of you). Allison Landry, our county math "expert," is in this group and she is fabulous!

CHERYL WILLIAMS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Martha (and Allison).  So glad others on the coast are here as well.

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Sheri!  I am also one of the super community members and like you, I teach 8th grade math and 8th grade Math 1!  And yes, our content is so different for 8th grade math 1 and no one seems to recognize it but the teachers!  I would love to collaborate with you!

I teach in Rockingham County, but I do have a friend that teaches math at Pender County Early College that I can connect you with if you are interested.

CHERYL WILLIAMS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Joy.  So glad there are others here in the same situation as me with 8th grade Math 1, and would love to network!

WENDY WILKINS 5 years, 5 months ago

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Barbara! Glad to see you on this team! I'm just down the road also in Western NC and while I'm no longer in the classroom, I'm glad to collaborate with you on math items (I taught HS math for 11 years in Murphy and have been tapped as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work). BTW, I have a lot of items already up on the oercommons.org site and am slowly linking them to the GoOpenNC platform. Cheers!

BARBARA SINK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your response! I'll look forward to seeing your items on GoOpenNC.

JAMIE MILES 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  My name is Jamie Miles, and I'm a fifth grade teacher in the foothills.  I'd love to collaborate with others on project-based learning (not just for AG students) and social/emotional lessons.  :)

SUZANNA SMITH 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello,

My name is Suzi Smith.  I am a teacher in Franklin County schools. I taught second grade for five years and moved to Kindergarten last year.

I am interested in collaborating with others in a STEM role.   That is amazing that some districts have a specific person dedicated to this area.   I have used STEM bins in my classroom for the past three years; they are made up of everyday objects and my kiddos LOVE getting to dive in each Friday.

I also would be interested in collaborating more with early elementary educators that teach writing.   This is an area I struggle with each year, our school and district does not have a set program.   I am excited this platform may serve as a place to gain some wonderful ideas and insight to teaching young writers.

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Suzi!  I am one of the super community members and I would love to work with you however I can.  I am middle school math.

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello all :)   My name is Melissa Barnhart and I am a high school math teacher & instructional leader with NCVPS.  I have worked with them in many areas, OCS, Intervention, and Traditional Math.

I would love to collaborate with people over ways to make math fun.   Creating and sharing activities for the classroom, games, etc.

Lisa Ragland 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Melissa! I am so glad to see so many NCVPS colleagues on here! I look forward to collaborating with you!

Jenny Conrad 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello. My name is Jenny Conrad and I am currently a Digital Learning Coordinator for Wake County Public Schools, working with Elementary through High School. Prior to starting this position last year, I was an Instructional Coach at the elementary level. I also taught third and fourth grades. I have worked in North Carolina and Virginia to develop curriculum resources for my districts and I'm very excited to be working on a state resource. I would like to collaborate with instructional coaches and people who live in the world in between curriculum and technology, especially those who are working on blending learning on different platforms.

Shannon Curry 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Jenny!

I was a digital technology instructional facilitator for three years. I have recently switched into a curriculum position, and I am starting my second year as an elementary math coordinator. I would love to connect on making some blended learning resources for grades 3-5 math!

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Jenny!  I am one of the super community members for this project.  I have a strong interest in curriculum and have worked with the NC2ML group during the revisions of the math curricula.  I look forward to working with you!

KRISTINA THOENNES 5 years, 5 months ago

I am Kristina Thoennes. I am a School Library Media Coordinator at an intermediate school (grades 4-6), so I am familiar with the curriculum and standards for those grade levels.

I would love to collaborate with educators who are interested in using game mechanics, creativity, and social learning to make learning materials that engage students actively.

I would also love to see the teachers at my school collaborating on this platform.

And I'd love to work with anyone in finding and creating resources that include diverse content so that all of our students see themselves in learning materials.

KIMBERLY MAWHINEY 5 years, 5 months ago

I am Kimberly Mawhiney.  I have been tapped as a "Super Community Member" so if any of you have questions, feel free to ask.  I have been teaching at Currituck County High School for 15 years.  I teach AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Chemistry. I have also taught Biology and Physical Science, however, the past 7 years have focused on Chem.  I love STEAM and try to incorporate it as much as possible, which is pretty easy in the science field. I always collaborate and as the department chair try to find resources for other teachers in my department that I think will fit their students needs.

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Kristina.  I am also a super community member.  I teach middle school math and love using inquiry and collaborative groups.  I look forward to working with you!

Cinnamon Frame 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello All!

My name is Cinnamon Frame and I have taught pretty much every science from 7th to adult education. I currently teach Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Zoology at Research Triangle High School in the RTP. I have also developed curriculum and taught for NCVPS and I am currently a curriculum developer for Quest Forward learning out of Nebraska. We are currently working on a Biochemistry "Journey" that incorporates concepts from AP Chemistry and AP Biology.

I would lean towards working primarily ith high school science teachers since that is my current main gig, but I am comfortable with middle school science, as well.

BETH ELMORE 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Cinnamon! Look forward to working with you in this group!

Julie Joyner 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Cinnamon! I'm Julie, and I'm a Super Community Member - meaning you can let me know if you have questions, want to delve further into the topics, or just become more engaged. Morgan Reece 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello!  I currently serve as Virtual Learning Specialist for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. I have a mixed bag of duties!  I support the development and implementation of online and blended programs in schools (mostly 6-12).  I also am first contact for tech and implementation support and PD for NCVPS, Edgenuity, as well as, supporting the use of Schoolnet.  I also support CDM and credit recovery in the district.  Prior to this role, I served a district media coordinator, and an elementary school media coordinator. I collaborate with a wide range of subject professionals in my role and look forward to collaborating with a variety here, too!  I want to make sure I know this resource for teachers I support!

Julie Joyner 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Morgan, I'm Julie. I'm a Super Community Member, and you're in my group. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you get the most out of this Curricular Review experience. I am sure you have so much to add, with your experiences in online and blended programs. Looking forward to collaborating with you!

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Carla!  I teach NC Math 1 for NCVPS and helped with the development of their NC Math 2 & NC Math 3 courses as well.   I'd love to collaborate with fellow math teachers and coaches as well!  It would be so wonderful to have shared resources!

Katelyn Jones 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi! My name is Katelyn Jones and I work in Franklin County where I teach high school math. I am certifided to teach Math & Psychology classes for grades 6-12.

In the fall, I teach Math 1 and 2 and in the spring, I teach Math 2 and Senior Seminar. While Math 1 and 2 touch on various math categories (Algebra, Geometry, Prob & Stat, and Trig), I love the Algebra! If I could collaborate with a specific set of educators, I would love to collaborate with those math teachers whose strengths are Geometry and Prob & Stat. While I can do the math, I don't really have the passion for the other categories like I do have for Algebra. I would love to see and hear that passion from other high school math teachers that maybe would ignite a passion in me for those subjects as well. :)

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Katelyn!  I am a math teacher living in Wake County.  I used to teach for Wake County Public Schools but now I work online only with NCVPS.  With them I teach mostly Math 1 but I have taught BC Calculus with them as well, and I've worked on the development contracts for Math 2 & Math 3.   While Prob & Stats are not my favorite thing, I understand it pretty well, and the Geometry content is some of my favorite stuff!

BETH ELMORE 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello all!  I am Beth Elmore and I teach 7th Science at Mill Creek Middle School in Catawba County.  I have a B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest University and a M.A. in Educational Media from Appalachian State University.  I am looking forward to making connections and sharing resources with fellow science educators.

CHRISTINE SPINELLA 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, I'm Christy Spinella and I am currently an Instructional Technology Facilitator at Manteo Middle School.  I love working with students and teachers with STEM activities.  This leads me into science and math classes and CTE classrooms.  I taught CTE Keyboarding and Business classes a few years ago and prior to that was a ITF in an elementary school.  I see potential to connect with all ELA & Social Studies teachers also.

Julie Joyner 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Christy! I'm Julie, one of the Super Community Members. If there's anything I can do to help you or just to make your experience with the curriculum review better, let me know. I teach middle school ELA, and I'm always interested in new (and free) technology to use in my classroom, so ideas are always welcome. :) I love Manteo, it must be wonderful to work and live there. I did live in Kill Devil Hills for about 6 months, right after graduation from ECU in 1990 (gasp! that was the last century!) and loved every minute.

Patricia Lipsey 5 years, 5 months ago

I have been teaching for 25 years both in the classroom and online,  I have taught both secondary school and college. I teach Spanish and Business.  I love computers an the technology of teaching online.  I am now retired from teaching f2f and teach only for NCVPS

If I could collaborate with other upper level Spanish teachers, I would discuss the challenges of translator use in upper levels. With improvement of translators it is very difficult to tell and unlike plagarism not as easily verified.  I think we need to rethink essay writing in foreign languages and find a solution.

Nathan Rutko 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Nathan Rutko, and I teach for the Department of Health and Human Services in the STARS program, in the areas of Mathematics, History, OCS, amd Theatre.  I am certified in the following areas: 6-9th Grade Mathematics, 6th-12th Grade Social Studies, and K-12 Special Education.  I also have training in Historic Preservation.  I have done some collaboration and work with Live-Binders, but would like to learn more about it, and what resources are there for teaching concepts from Mathematics (Intro to Math, Math I) History (American History 1, American History 2, Foundign Principles, North Carolina History) and OCS (Financial Management, Occupation Preparation).

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Nathan!  I am a super community member and I am looking forward to working with you.  I teach 8th grade math and math 1, so we can definitely share ideas in that area.  You seem to have a vast educational experience!  My district used live binder to launch a personalized learning initiative last year.  While I do not know much about it's creation, I can definitely connect you with those who do know if interested!

Nathan Rutko 5 years, 4 months ago

Hello Joy,

I've been teaching math in various settings (middle and high school, alternative school and as a homebound instructor and after-school tutor) so I am fairly familiar with the content material for various math levels.  Earlier this afternoon, I uploaded an activity I used on National Pi Day 2019 to assist my Intro to Math and Math I students in exploring Pi and its relationship to Area, Circumference, Diameter and Radius of circles.  Please feel free to review it and use if like.

Dawn Perez 5 years, 5 months ago

I'm Dawn Perez and currently I am a Middle School Literacy Coach working with teachers in 4 middle schools here in Buncombe County, Asheville.  In addition to teaching in Buncombe County, I've taught in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake County Schools as a classroom teacher, an academically gifted specialist, and as a Teacher Certification Instructor at Central Piedmont Community College.

I would like to collaborate more with educators about differentiating open educational resources for all students.  I think it would be helpful to identify a resource and remix it to support students at differing levels of mastery.

JULIE CLARK-MCCOY 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Dawn! I am Julie McCoy and I am a Academic Coach in a Middle School in Richmond County. I would love to collborate on resources for all subjects for all students as well. Looking forward to working with you.

Melissa Edgerton 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello everyone!

My name is Melissa Edgerton. I currently teach in Wayne County. I serve as my school's Title I Teacher, Parent Involvement Coordinator, and Curriculum Facilitator.

I would love to collaborate with elementary educators. Since I support the entire K-5 curriculum, I would love to find resources and ideas which support the teachers within any of the core subjects. We have an awesome staff, but some could really benefit from digital tools that effectively support instruction.

James Bello 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is James Bello, but I go by Bo. My content expertise is American History and AP Human Geography. I currently only teach AP Human Geography but I have taught American History for several years and am still a mentor to American History teachers. I am a teacher but also I play a small role in the district by providing PD and being part of the DBQ Project team.

If I could collaborate with a specific set of eduators it could be to fit one of two scenarios. First, content would be a group I would like to collaborate with. It would be awesome if there are other AP Human Geography teachers on here but American History or social studies in general would be good. The second group would be other content teachers who are looking to develop cross-curricular units and lessons. This is an area I am trying to focus on and develop so if anyone is looking to collaborate on building cross-curricular activities I would welcome that.

Melissa Edgerton 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Bo! Although I'm an elementary person, my sister teaches the same classes as you. I really look forward to the collaboration here. It will be great to learn from you and take some ideas to her as well.

JULIE CLARK-MCCOY 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! I am Julie McCoy. I am currently the Academic Coach at Cordova Middle School in Richmond County. I have 15 years of experience in education mainly teaching ELA in 6th grade, but as an academic coach I work with all subjects and standards 6-8.

I am looking to collaborate with educators who want to integrate ELA standards into Social Studies and Science standards and also looking to collaborate with knowledable educators on harty 6-8 Math lessons.

James Bello 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Julie....cross curricular is an area for me and as a social studeis teacher would love to learn more about ELA standards.

Shannon Curry 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! My name is Shannon Curry.

Charlene Burroughs 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  I am Charlene Burroughs, and I teach Honors Biology and Earth/Environmental Science in Granville County.  I have taught high school science--Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science--for the past 25 years (24 in Granville County).  My expertise in teaching is biology, but I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in geology, so I have a passion for rocks, earhquakes, mountains, and paleonology.   I love "tweaking" and designing curriculum that is engaging, relevant, and memorable.  I look forward to collaborating with other high school science teachers and sharing with my colleagues in Granville Country.

Welcome! I am also teaching at the high school level (English). I also love tweaking my curriculum and I love it when I see my students years later and they tell me how much they loved a memorabe unit. I am one of the super community members, so please let me know if I can help with any collaboration,

TATIA DAVIS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello All! My name is Tatia Davis. I teach high-school students (English and Freshman Seminar, College-Prep Seminar) at Durham Public Schools, as well as mentor/coach beginning and pre-service teachers. I love everything dealing with educational/instructional technology, social justice in education, and culturally-relevant pedogagy and practice. Very few things make me happier than learning from other educators! Together, we are changing the world each day.

I would love to collaborate with fellow educators who are striving each day to be authentic, culturally responsive teachers. I think that through this platform, we will grow together so that we (educators) and our students can transform our schools, districts, communities and society.

These are areas that I have found that I can integrate into my library program fairly easily!

PATRICIA COLDREN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Ashley! I'm participating as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. CATHERINE LITTLETON 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, I'm Cathy Littleton. I am a librarian at Laurel Mill Elementary in Franklin County. I also taught middle school Science and Social Studies for ten years. As a librarian, I get to dabble in a little bit of everything and love to model ways books, technology, and STEAM activities can get students excited about learning by letting them explore their own interests. I am looking forward to collaborating with educators who are passionate about student-led inquiry.

Christina Speiser 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Cathy!

As a librarian, I am sure you will be able to add some great ideas for teachers to bring great activities into our lessons. I love incorporating STEAM into lessons and I look forward to hearing about your ideas for student-led inquiry. I am a super community member, so please let me know if I can help you out with any collaboration efforts.

Rebecca Welch 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello!  My name is Rebecca Welch, and I am from Charlotte, NC.  My experience in education has been in teaching both middle and high school Math and Science.  Currently, I am a Secondary Math Specialist for my district.

The answer to this second part of the question is two-fold.  When this platform goes live for everyone, I would really like to collaborate with my teachers, as there are so many of them that I don't get to interact with most of them regularly. I also would like to collaborate with other specialists/district level coaches.  I think it would be really neat to hear from them about what they use for their curriculum and how they use it.

Sherry Edwards 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello I am Sherry Edwards.  My content expertise is Library Media.  I am a Media Specialist at a middle school.  I  would  like to collaborate with other Media Specialist, ELA teachers and Social Studies teachers.

HEATHER LANDRETH 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! My name is Heather Landreth. I taught kindergarten for 14 years. Last year, I taught 2nd grade and will be looping with those students to 3rd grade this coming school year. I teach all subjects but have found I have a love for teaching STEM. If I could collaborate more with a specific set of eductors it would be those who have experience with students with social emotional needs as well as AIG teachers. I see more and and more emotional struggles for studnets and want to make sure I am doing all that I can to help them grow. Additionally, I think it is important to see growth from every child in my classroom. Often, it is difficult to ensure I am meeting the needs of my gifted learners. Growing those students was a focus for me last year & continues to be an area I would like to improve.

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Heather!  That has always sounded like such a cool idea, following a set of students up to the next grade level.   I have had a few kids here and there that I've taught in one math subject and then again in a future class, but it was few and far between.  I love that you have such a great focus on meeting he needs of all of your learners!  That is so awesome!

Susan Joyce 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  I'm Susan Joyce.  I work as an K-5 AIG teacher in Wake County (my full time job) and then I do curriculum writing as a consultant.  I taught 3rd grade for a number of years, and I was also a Title 1 instructional coach for 1 year.

I am interested in this project because I would love to collaborate on enrichment ideas with other teachers, and with our busy schedules, an online collaboration platform is ideal.

PATRICIA COLDREN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Susan! I'm participating as one of the "Super Community Members" for this work, so please reach out if I can help in any way. I've had several different roles in my district as well. Also, as a parent of a current AIG student I'm super interested in making sure there are quality resources available to our teachers to meet all of our students' needs!

PATRICIA COLDREN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi!  Patricia Coldren from Lee County Schools.  I am currently the Beginning Teacher Coordinator/National Board Coordinator/Instructional Technology Supervisor in our district.  I am super excited about the opportunities that GoOpen offers our teachers!  I remember the power of Learn NC and someone mentioned that on the webinar.  Previously I was an Elementary teacher and administrator.  Specifically I taught 4th and 5th grade, but I have worked in several other grade levels.  I would love to collaborate with other ITFs and coaches to see how this will strengthen your practice.

WILLOW 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi I'm Willow Alston-Socha (so-ha).

I am one of two K-12 Science Specialists working for Durham Public Schools. The bulk of my experience is in teaching and coaching 9-12 science, but I have been working exclusively with K-5 science in the last 3 years.

I would like to collaborate more with those who hold positions similar to mine. It seems like we are all doing similar tasks in our work and would potentially have a lot to share. I would also like to find better ways to facilitate the collaboration of teachers.

Martha Levey 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Willow, my name is Martha Levey and I'm one of the "Super Community Members" and you are in my group! Please let me k now if you have any questions!

APRIL COOPER 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi everyone, my name is April Cooper. My K-12 content expertise is CTE centered... Technology, IT, Business, etc. My current role is as a Virtual CTE Teacher/Coordinator based in the CTE Department in our district. KATHRYN WOODWARD 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! My name is Kathryn Woodward and I currently teach 2nd grade with Currituck County Schools. I have been teaching 10 years and in that time I have served on curriculum planning boards, piloted math programs and created K-2 report cards for the district. I am also AIG certifed.  I am currently working on my MLS from East Carolina University. I look forward to working with all of you!

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Kathryn!   That's great that you've piloted math programs.  Which ones did you pilot?  I am not sure if I would know them since my expertise is in High School math but I have recently piloted a co-taught online math course where we partner with a teacher in the classroom.  It was exciting to be there when a new program was launching!  Kind of like this #GoOpenNC thing :)

STEPHANIE REVIS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! I am Stephanie Revis from Burke County Schools over here in the western part of the state. I have been been a middle school teacher for 22 years with my expertise in ELA and SS and Literacy. I also teach online classes for Burke County middle schools and earned my MLS in 2012 and renewed my National Boards in 2016. One of my certifications is K-12 Reading and I have always made reading instruction an important part of my daily lessons. I'm aways thinking about ways that my students access text. I am interested in discussing how others have kept a sound literacy model (independent reading, direct reading instruction, word study, etc.) while implementing PBL. How do you make time for it all without losing some of the literacy pieces that middle schoolers so desperately need?

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Stephanie!  That's awesome that you teach online classes for Burke County *Middle* schoos.   I have been teaching high schoo math for North Carolina Virtual Public Schools since 2011 and have only had a handful of middle schoolers in my classes.  They seemed to do quite well in my experience :)  I love your focus on reading, and agree with the struggle to get it all in!

Melanie Stankiewicz 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Melanie Stankiewicz. I am a kindergarten teacher in CMS. I am heading into my 26th year of teaching. My first 12 years were spent in Florida. I am an Early Childhood Expert. I have 23 years of kindergarten experience, and I have 6 years of experience woking in a Pre-K setting. I am also National Board Certified in Early Childhood. I have worked as a literacy tutor with grades K-4 for about 17 months.

I would dearly love to be able to collaborate with other K teachers across NC. I feel there is a discrepency between my county and others on grade level expectations and use of materials. I would love to see resources that others have found helpful and valuable.

ANGELA ALMOND 5 years, 5 months ago

My name is Angela Almond.  I have a K-12 Reading graduate degree from ECU.  I taught fourth grade (all subjects) for thirteen years.  I then moved to seventh grade ELA three years ago.  Last year, I took on seventh grade Social Studies, along with the ELA.  I am scheduled to take the Social Studies Praxis later in August.  I would really like to collaborate with other middle grades ELA and Social Studies teachers.

Sandra McAuley 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, all.

I am Sandy McAuley and I am a high school math teacher at an Early College High School.  As a small school (only 2 math teachers), I love any opportunity to collaborate with other math teachers.  I would love to collaborate with other math teachers from upper elementary through high school as I think that the vertical alignment is so important for teachers and students.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Sandy! I taught at an math (and physics) at an early college for all 11 years I was still in the classroom - Tri-County Early College in Murphy. We were in the same boat wiht a small staff, but really developed a strong culture of collaboration, something that was essential as a PBL school. BTW, you can find many of the projects and math activities I/we did on the oercommons.org website (just look for my name). I'm slowly linking them over to the GoOpenNC website also. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or just want to bounce ideas off of someone!

HEIDI PEREZ 5 years, 5 months ago

Heidi Perez

Durham Public Schools 9-12 Literacy Specialist

Literacy for all in all classrooms is my expertise and passion.

I'd like to collaborate with Math teachers  to really expand our understanding of the role of literacy in Mathematics learning & teaching.

Rebecca Welch 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello Heidi!

I would LOVE to expand on my districts understanding of the role of literacy in Mathematics.  As a Secondary Math Specialist I really think that literacy is often overlooked - but is essential to effective math teaching.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Heidi & Rebecca! Love this conversation because I'm a strong believer in the "Read, Write, Think, Talk - Every Class, Every Lesson, Everry Day" approach. It also reminds me of a complaint I would typically get from students who were new to my rather unorthodox math classroom: "Mr. O, why do we do so much writing in a math class?" My answer was to remind them that real-world problems were not in nice, siloed packages like the artificial construct of school, but messy and often involve multidisciplinary approaches to analyze, solve, justify, and publish/present one's result (this is why doing math in a cross-curricular PBL environment is so powerful). Another tool I frequently used was George Pola's famous problem solving technique that required students to understand, plan, and reflect on their problem solving approach - either verbally to me or a peer or more often in writing via their math portfolio or journal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Solve_It. Hope that helps!

VICKI OVERTON 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Vicki!!  I am a Secondary Math Specialist with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.  I'd love to collaborate with you anytime!!

KATHRIN MORRISON 5 years, 5 months ago

Kathrin (Katie) Morrison

I am a high school mathematics teacher. I teach 9th graders Math I and II at an Early College and I also teach AFM for NCVPS.

Last year was my first year teaching both Math I and II. At the Early College we use a lot of discovery learning and I would love to collaborate with other math teachers that use the investigative teaching approach.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Katie! As I mentioned to Sandy above, I taught math (and physics) at an early college for all 11 years I was still in the classroom - Tri-County Early College in Murphy. I'd love to collaborate, especially on ways to being a more inquiry/investigative approach to math I, II, & III classrooms. I'm sure you use it already, but Dan Meyer's approach was the true game-changer in my career: https://blog.mrmeyer.com/. BTW, you can find many of the projects and math activities I/we did on the oercommons.org website (just look for my name). I'm slowly linking them over to the GoOpenNC website also. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or just want to bounce ideas off of someone!

KATHRIN MORRISON 5 years, 5 months ago

Thanks so much Ben! I will check out that blog and I will look for your things on the website. Last year I was new to the Early College and 7 months pregnant....I was just in survival mode. So this year I am going to work at really doing a better job with projects and activities!! I may bend your ear! :)

I am empowered and willing to collaborate with K-8 Computer skills/media specialists, K-8 Social studies teachers and K-8 science teachers in tech rich learning environments.

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Frank!   Your job sounds great.  I agree that technology provides some amazing additions to understanding and instruction.   I personally do not have experience in the areas you mentioned (I teach high school math, and am exclusively teaching online with North Carolina Virtual Public Schools since the fall of 2011), however I do know that the benefits you've mentioned here span all the way through high school math :)

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

I am Joy McCormick.  I teach 8th grade math and Math 1 and serve on way too many committees at the school, district, and state level (ass we all do!).  I am highly interested in curriculum development and reform and supporting teachers through the process.

I am also the mini-grant coordinator for the North Carolina Council for Teachers of Mathemetics (NCCTM), so send me a message if you are a NC math teacher and are interested in finding out more about available grant money!

Over the past few years, I have worked with many teachers across the state, specifically middle school and high school math, on finding resources and implementing high quality math instruction.  So, my comfort zone is definitely math 6-8 or 9-12.

Danielle Flores 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Joy!

I would love to know how to find out more about available grant money.  :)

CHERYL WILLIAMS 5 years, 5 months ago

Joy, I would love to know more about grant writing.  I am always looking for extra materials and resources, but I have been intimidated by the idea of writing a grant.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

JOY MCCORMICK 5 years, 5 months ago

I am definitely not a pro at grant writing, but I will help any way I can!  Send me your email address or email me at jmccormick@rock.k12.nc.us and I will send you some grant info.

MELISSA KING 5 years, 5 months ago

Greetings everyone! I'm Melissa King and I live in Wilmington. I have been teaching Secondary Science for 15 years. I've taught Chemistry, Physical Science, Biology, and AP Biology in NC, TN, and KY. I'm from Wilmington and have been back with New Hanover County Schools for the last 9 years. Making the transition to Pender Early College HS for the upcoming year teaching mostly Biology. Last year, I delveloped an online Biology course for NHCS and delivered that via Canvas to students in the 4 traditional high schools. It was a first for the school system and I loved teaching remotely (while still teaching my classes F2F). I also teach OCS Science for NCVPS. I'm excited to share resources with colleagues in both counties and across the state. It's wonderful to hear that this tool works with both Canvas and Google Classroom as those platforms are what many of my colleagues use.

Melissa Edgerton 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Melissa! I am Melissa Edgerton, one of the Super Community members. I love using Google Classroom with my students. You have amazing experiences, and I am really looking forward to collaborating with you throughout this experience.

CHERYL WILLIAMS 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Melissa,  I'm in Wilmington also at the middle school math level.  I'm working with a Math 1 team to write curriculum for Math 1 teachers to use this year through Canvas, but it's not intended to be used directly for students.

Joanne Rowe 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi..Joanne Rowe here.

I am a high school math teacher at a magnet school and teach freshmen thru seniors.  I would like to present math problems with real world applications and show an interdisciplinary connection with science.

Ben Owens 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi, Joanne! I'd love to collaborate, given that I was a math & physics teacher in a PBL environment for 11 years and, like my peers, would always look for ways to blur the lines between traditional soloed classes - especially math & science. BTW, you can find many of the projects I/we did on the oercommons.org website (just look for my name). I'm slowly linking them over to the GoOpenNC website also. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or just want to bounce ideas off of someone!

Melissa Barnhart 5 years, 5 months ago

Hi Joanne!  I am a high school math teacher too!  I teach with North Caroline Virtual Public Schools.   Mostly I have taught Math 1 with them, but I have also taught AP Calculus BC with them a few times, and I've worked on the development of their Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, AP Calc AB & BC courses.    So I too am used to teaching freshman through seniors :)

I love being able to work in real world applications and I think some of those interdisciplinary connections are fun and intresting for students.  I've love to collaborate on more resources in those areas too!

BITSY GRIFFIN 5 years, 5 months ago

Good morning!

I'm Bitsy Griffin. I'm currently in WSFCS, but I've taught all over the western part of the Piedmont. I've been a school librarian since 2012. Six of those have been at the ES level. Before that I primarily taught Algebra 1 & Geometry with a few physical science courses (and one 10th grade English) thrown in for good measure, so I wasn't sure ES was going to be a good fit. I have loved it though! As a librarian, I want to collaborate with EVERYONE about EVERYTHING, but if I have to pick, I'd love to have some deeper collaboration among librarians.

MARINA BONOMO 5 years, 5 months ago

Hey Bitsy!

Nice to see you on here--though I would have expected nothing less. Hope you are well!  I am super excited about this resource.

MARTHA ARRINGTON 5 years, 5 months ago

Torrieann Dooley Kennedy 5 years, 5 months ago

Greetings! I'm Torrieann Dooley Kennedy and I am currently serving as the Teacher-in-Residence for the Beginning Teacher Development and Support (BTD&S) team in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). I am licensed in K-6 and spent 13 years teaching various elementary grades (all subjects), 3 years in Talent Management, which was the performance management team in CMS, and 1 year with the BTD&S team.  I am also working on my doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction in Urban Elementary Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC).  I am also Mom to a little girl who just turned 1 yesterday, so I've spent the last year researching early childhood education and development skills as well. My work and research areas currently focus on supporting both beginning teachers as well the mentors and experienced teachers who support them and would love to connect with others who support beginning teachers and mentors as well.

EMILY POTTER 5 years, 5 months ago

I love the idea of the Beginning Teacher Developement and support program! Supporting our new teachers is so very important.  I'd love to hear more about that...how it works...and what you do as the Teacher in Residence!

EMILY POTTER 5 years, 5 months ago

HI my name is Emily Potter.  I teach kindergarten in Franklin county schools.  I have been a kindergarten teacher for most of my 15 years...it's my heart!  I have a M.Ed in LIteracy curriculum and Instruction and my ESL certification.

I am always looking for ways to improve my reading and writing instruciton for my ELL babies and would love to find ways to do that here. Writing ideas for all my students would also be wonderful!  I also love curriculum design and review so being able to use this platform to explore and remix things for my students is very exciting!  The vertical alignment opportunities in this group are also a huge focus for me.  I would love to collaborate with 1st grade teachers to ensure i'm sending my babies on ready for a first grade teachers expectations!

AMY FOREMAN 5 years, 5 months ago

Hello! My name is Amy Foreman and I am a 4th grade ELA teacher, my content expertise is reading. If I could collaborate it would be with teachers who love digging into a particular problem they are having in their classroom and doing the research necessary to solve it. These teachers would be data driven (although I am not a math person!) and would allow that data to help them in their decision making. I love trying to figure out what is going on in a kids mind and helping them to be successful!

HELEN NAGAN 5 years, 5 months ago

I am Helen Nagan, an artist and art teacher. I retired from Ftf 5 years ago and have been loving teaching digital phototgraphy and art for NCVPS. On the side, I draw caricatures and do a variety of artworks from murals to helping with crafts in my granddaughter's schools. I love interacting with others in any artistic way! This being said, I welcome any kind of new art projects that can enhance the online experience. Since the visual and graphic elements of technology are changing so rapidly for educators and students, I would love to collaborate on how to embrace these changes. Some students are able to access everything new, and can understand it all, while others are still struggling with slow or poor technology and/or confusion about how to use it. We need to level out the playing field while still making progress!

I love being in the classroom with students and also love planning with and coaching new teachers. My long-term goal is to broaden my reach to teach and/or coach online, so I would love to connect with others who use technology extensively to teach and learn.

Hello All --

My name is DeVona, as far as content expertise I'm not really sure.... I have taught 3rd and 4th grade 2 years in each of those grade levels. I then moved to Middle school English Language Arts in which I taught 6th grade for 3 years and 7th grade for the previous 5 years. This year I made a HUGE transition and am will be teaching 1st grade at Lincoln Elementary in Rockingham county. I have an undergrad in Elem. Ed, a Master's in Curriculum & Instruction and a Post Master's in School Administration - I also start my MBA in October. I enjoyed teaching reading but have always felt stronger in math so not really sure what my expertise would truly be.

If I could collaborate with a specific set of educators considering my current transition it would definitely be K-2 teachers with a focus on Guided Reading AND Guided Math.
