As a literacy facilitator in an elementary school, we use this book regularly in fourth grade to also connect with the essential standards for social studies- NC history. Full alignment to depth and breadth of standard(s) tagged for fourth grade, with foreshadowing being a reach standard (not a fourth grade standard). Learning objectives need clarifying in order to provide specificity for the purpose of the chart and how it should be used. Has some assessment strategies that will measure student progress of the specified standards, but needs additional summative strategies. Strengths include text-dependent questions and that Instructional purpose and alignment with NC curricular standard(s) are explicitly stated or easily inferred. Majority of
content and performance expectations in the associated NC standard(s) are addressed. Vocabulary in context reflects how students are tested. Suggestions for strengthening the resource include directions for how it should be used and a rubric for how the assessment could be evaluated.

This is a lesson plan centered on 3 chapters in the selected novel. If this is part of a larger lesson plan (perhaps for the whole novel) the there would be partial alignment by covering only the "provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions and judgments" part of standard. Learning objectives need clarifying in order to address specifics (outside of determining a theme) in the lesson. No assessment strategies have been indicated in the resource, so users should plan to add some type of assessment. This resource offers a way to do an activity with students on selected chapters and is accessible for all students. Additional standards need to be tagged surround author's style and purpose.
