Identify and Count On

Identify and Count On

Materials Needed-

  1. Counting Cards
  2. Class of at least 10 students.

Whole group-

Students should begin sitting in a circle on the classroom carpet. Teacher will begin by stating the learning target:

I can count forward beginning from a number other than 1.

The class will practice/review rote counting from 0-10. The teacher will then introduce how we can count beginning at any number, not just 0. Teacher will explain the directions for the activity:

  1. Students will choose a number card (0-10) and identify which number they have (number recognition).
  2.  Beginning with the first student in the circle, Student 1 will identify and name the number on their card. Student 1 must state the number name, and the student next to them must continue the counting sequence (i.e Student 1 had the number 5. The student next to them must then continue counting 6).
  3. Student 2 repeats the same procedure.
  4. Continue until all students in the class have gone.

Differentiation-

  • Teacher can decide to have students continue counting on around the circle for how ever many numbers the class can handle. It is encouraged to being counting on just one number and build up to counting around the whole circle.
  • Students can also complete this activity in pairs, taking turns choosing a card and counting on until 10.
  • Teacher can display a number on the board and the class as a whole can read the number and continue the counting sequence aloud.
