American History 2: 1990s Graphic Organizer and Discussion Questions (Remix)

American History Graphic Organizer

Directions: Watch the documentaries about significant events that took place in the United States in the 1990s.  While watching the videos, fill out the accompanying graphic organizers to gather information. After you have filled out the graphic organizer, participate in the five discussion questions that accompany the videos.

Discussion Strategies for Teachers: Here are some formats in which teachers could conduct these discussions:

*Cafe Tables: Arrange student desks into small groups (pods).  Have students discuss all of the questions within their small groups.

*Socratic Seminar: Ask students to answer the discussion questions individually on paper.  Select a discussion facilitator among students and have that student call on peers for input (teachers, try not to participate too much since this is a student-led discussion, but intervene if the discussion gets off track or becomes inappropriate/insensitive).

*Fishbowl Discussion: Form an outer circle and an inner circle and have them face each other (so students are partnered up… one from the inner circle and one from the outer circle).  Pose a discussion question and give students time to talk while you circulate the room.  Have one circle rotate and then pose a new question (or you may choose to repeat the initial question).

*Jigsaw: Arrange student desks into small groups (pods) of equal number.  Assign each pod a discussion question.  Once each pod has had sufficient time to answer its discussion question, rearrange students so that there is a representative from each discussion group in the new groups.  Allow students to discuss all of the questions now that they are sitting with members of other groups.
