Classroom reading and Flipgrid Book Review Guide

Part One:  students will monitor their reading using a digital reading log to keep track of their independent reading material.

An example is:  Digital Reading Log

Part Two:  Share book reviews with students.  Some sites are:  DOGO Books, or  Spaghetti Book Club.

Brainstorm with students what they noticed about the book reviews.  What made them a good review?  What made them not a good review?

Create a list of what a good book review should include.  ( Title, Author, short summary without any spoilers, correct grammar/spelling)

Read a picture book with students and have them write a good book review with you as a group.  Be sure to make sure everything on your list for a good book review is included in your review.

Allow students to select a book from their digital reading log and write a book review using a digital word processing tool such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

Students will use the written review and complete a Flipgrid video giving a book review.  Students can complete monthly book reviews that will be shared with QR code posted in the library for other students to view. To prep this activity, the teacher will need to create a free Flipgrid account at http://www.flipgrid.com and create a grid entitled "Book Reviews".  Students will then need to be shown how to access the grid to create their video reviews.  This can be a center in the classroom that students can do as they are ready to complete reviews.  The activity can be differentiated for students by requiring more/fewer reviews based on their ability to read.  ELL Students can complete videos using dual language skills.  A sample script is provided to help students become accustomed to organizing their thoughts for video and for practice when they first begin doing video book reviews.

Book reviews can also be posted online using the sites above to share each student's review with the global audience.
