In this part of the unit on ratios and proportions, students will use ratio language to write ratios in a real-world context.  They will be architects who are designing an amusement park, an aquarium research center, or a baseball stadium.  Students will write equivalent ratios and use them to make their building a physically safe space that meets all building requirements.  During this project, students will also be converting between units (e.g., inches and feet) as they find equivalent ratios.  After students have made all of their calculations, they will analyze another set of design specifications and create a presentation explaining whether these new specifications would result in an architecturally safe building.  Students will use their math calculations from the design challenge to justify their answers.

Students will research an African American person based on set questions. The students will present their person in a digital presentation format.

For this activity, 4th and 5th grade AIG learners will read a book of choice featuring characters who are gifted in some way. Students will then use the bibliotheraphy questions to create a presentation showing how they identify and do not identify with the characters and events of the book.

While the resource is targeted to upper elementary school students, it could be modified to use with middle school students.

Gifted students answer bibliotherapy questions, use a note-catcher and complete a project based on their answers.

The repercussions of the Great Migration are far-reaching. Today, much of the restlessness and struggle that the Blues helped to articulate in the Migration era remains central in other forms of American music, including Hip Hop. In this lesson, students look to Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf as case studies that illustrate why African Americans left the South in record numbers and how communities came together in new urban environments, often around the sound of the Blues.

In this lesson, students will analyze several of the elements that combined to make Berry such an important and influential artist. They will examine his pioneering guitar riffs, his carefully crafted lyrics that spoke directly to the emerging market of white, middle-class teen listeners, his blend of R&B and Country and Western influences, and his energetic performance style, which helped pave the way for a generation of guitar-playing showmen.

In this lesson, students will trace the influence of Gospel music on early Rock and Roll, particularly in R&B's embrace of such key musical features as the call-and-response and in the uses of complex rhythms. The class will make side-by-side comparisons of Gospel and early Rock and Roll songs, as well as work in groups to chart the overall influence of Gospel on a range of different popular music genres.

This lesson uses the book, Like a Hundred Drums, by Annette Griessman. The lesson can be used by music educators to practice dynamics and NCES ML.3, create music using a variety of sound and notational sources in grades K, 1 and 3.

This is an example reading log I've used before to help students document their reading at home while practicing foundational skills. As an extension activity, students will choose one book as they complete reading and use Flipgrid to do a digital book review of the materials. This activity provides a reading log with a focus on Depth and Complexity ideas. Students will record their independent reading minutes and ideas about their reading.
After competing their book, students will use their Depth and Complexity Reading Log notes to create a digital book review to be shared with other students. A guide is included for students to use as they create their digital book review as well as a script. The teacher selects the digital platform that students will use to create their review (Flipgrid, Google Slides, WeVideo).
