Encouraging Respect for Diversity Through Reading Choices

Many of us as human beings tend to gravitate towards what we are familiar with and what makes us feel safe, comfortable and therefore confident. Students may similarly find an author, genre or subject that satisfies this for them as well. This remix takes the original Tic Tac Toe board and includes more directed tasks per square as well as a formative feedback option. The goal is still to encourage students to build empathy and compassion by reading books about diverse characters as well as those in which students most closely identify. The resource is based upon the original Reading Without Walls board by Margaret Sullivan Brannon and her interpreation on Gene Luen Yang's work as the Former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

The board is not meant to be a lesson in and of itself, but as an additional resource for independent reading, reading initiatives and/or to deliver choice as a formative assessment. The list of extensions and additional uses are also just examples and offer possible paths in which to utilize the resource.
