Ozobots for Motion K.P.1.2

Activating Strategy to Connect to Prior Knowledge

This slide introduces students to the concept that Ozobots use senses, much like we do. It highlights the common vocabulary in yellow for the word forms of sensors, sense, and senses. An image licensed by CC shows five human senses.

Predicting

How does it sense how to move?

Ozobots are robots that use sensors on the bottom.

This slide has an image of the Ozobot from the front and an image of the underside with the sensors.

Make a predict about which of our 5 senses is probably what the Ozobot will use.

This slide shows the 5 senses again contrasted with the sensors on the bottom of the Ozobot.

Exploration of Motion

Today we will explore and explain how Ozobot moves when it senses information.

Partner 1 will take care of Ozobot.
Partner 2 will take care of the information for Ozobot.

You both will have papers and markers to use.

Jobs:

Everyone learns how to calibrate Ozobot.  We will read directions with pictures and steps to follow in sequence.

Calibrate means to change a setting to make sure something is accurate.   We use this a lot with tools that need to measure something.

Ozobot’s sensor will measure light and dark.  We calibrate Ozobot so it knows how dark the color black should be on paper.

Compare how it moves across lines

Partner 1: Put Ozobot on the thick line at the top of your paper.

What did Ozobot do?

Partner 2: Put Ozobot on the thin line at the bottom of your paper.
What did Ozobot do?

Was Ozobot’s action the same or different?

Ozobot sits on the thick line. Observe how it moves. Put Ozobot on the thin line. How was that different motion?

Predict how Ozobot will move around a maze

Partner 1: Put Ozobot anywhere on the maze.

Partner 2: What did you notice?

Try again.

Did Ozobot act the same way?

Did Ozobot move fast, move slow, or zig-zag?  Did Ozobot move another way?

How did Ozobot know what to do?
