Task Excerpt:

Domain

Counting and Cardinality

Cluster

Compare numbers.

Standard(s)

NC.K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects, within 10, in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, by using matching and counting strategies.

Materials

5 yellow bears, 4 blue bears, 7 green bears, 7 red bears

Task Overview

Students compare two sets of objects using matching and counting strategies.  The sets of objects are compared using the language “greater than”, “less than” or “equal to”.

Task

1.      Give the student a set of 5 yellow bears and a set of 4 blue bears.  Say:

·       There are some yellow bears in this set and some blue bears in this set.

·       How many yellow bears are there?  How many blue bears are there?

·       Is the number of yellow bears greater than or less than the number of blue bears or is the number of bears the same?  Explain your thinking.

2.      Give the student a set of 7 green bears and a set of 7 red bears. Say:

·         There are some green bears in this set and some red bears in this set.

·         How many green bears are there?  How many red bears are there?

·         Is the number of green bears greater than or less than the number of red bears or is the number of bears the same?  Explain your thinking.

3.      Give the student a set of 7 green bears and a set of 5 yellow bears. Say:

·         There are some green bears in this set and some yellow bears in this set.

·         How many green bears are there?  How many yellow bears are there?

·         Is the number of yellow bears greater than or less than the number of green bears or is the number of bears the same?  Explain your thinking.

Continuum of Understanding

Not Yet

Proficient

·         Is unable to compare any of the sets accurately

Progressing

·         Correctly identifies which group is greater, than, less than or equal to in at least 1 situation

·         Attempts to use a counting or matching strategy to compare the sets, but incorrectly answers the question(s)

Meets Expectations

·         Is able to correctly identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than less than or equal to the number of objects in another group for all 3 comparison situations

·         Uses a matching or counting strategy to compare
