Rating
0.0 stars

In this case study, students will be introduced to active conservation work going on in Africa. Set against the restoration of war-torn Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, The Guide tells the story of a young man from the local community who discovers a passion for science after meeting world-renowned biologist E.O. Wilson. Produced by Academy Award winning filmmaker Jessica Yu, the film weaves themes in conservation biology and environmental science, the value of scientific mentorship, and the social and economic realities of wilderness restoration. The film and accompanying resources serve as a case study in ecology and conservation biology.

In this hands-on activity students examine the evidence for the evolution of human bipedality as revealed by a trail of fossil footprints. Students first study footprints made by themselves or their classmates using paint. Next, they make observations and draw inferences from an illustration of the Laetoli trackway, compare their own footprints from those at Laetoli, and evaluate the evidence that the Laetoli footprints were made by a fully bipedal human ancestor.

Students simulate a lactose tolerance test in this lab. They will combine milk with "patients' intestinal fluid samples," which consist of either water or a lactose solution. They then measure the amount of glucose produced over time and collect, analyze, and graph their data to determine which patients are lactose tolerant or lactose intolerant.

In this activity, students study a graph illustrating the proportion of prey captured by three predators for each of six species of arthropod prey. The prey species are listed in order of palatability (based on a combination of all defenses, such as spines and chemicals) with the least palatable on the left and most palatable on the right. Students will analyze the graph and answer a series of questions to determine if members of a mimetic complex enjoy greater protection from predation than nonmimics.
