In this exercise, students examine a portrait of George Washington painted in 1796 by Gilbert Stuart. The portrait is highly symbolic and presents a grand, heroic image of Washington. Students examine a close-up of one symbol in the portrait as well as the portrait as a whole and then answer the following questions: What do you notice about the symbol?
