In this lesson, students are introduced to authority figures in the community who make and enforce rules. They come to understand that, just like home, the community has rules that provide order, security, and safety.

In this lesson, students learn about what makes a celebration. They brainstorm celebrations they have experienced and classify them into categories. Students focus on national holidays and learn about two holidays celebrated in our national community: Veterans Day and Independence Day.

The celebration will focus on what is important to the school. Students learn the decision making process and work in planning groups to determine key aspects of the celebration and write a letter explaining the proposal to an authority figure in the school, such as the school principal. Students use voting as a way to make a group decision.

Kindergarten students review the physical and human features of their community and how they affect the way people live. Students learn about the people in the school community, their jobs and job descriptions, and identify locations of those jobs within the school. Students also learn how these jobs contribute to meeting the needs of the school community.

They learn about jobs in the school, build map skills as they interpret maps, and create a simple map of the school showing important places. They follow directions to locate places on the map and describe the locations relative to other locations.

Students learn about the need for rules. They identify rules, classify rules, and vote on rules for their classroom. They also learn about the positive and negative consequences associated with following or not following rules and about and how these consequences affect individuals, as well as the classroom community.

Students are introduced to the Constitution. They have learned about rules at home and at school. Students will learn that our country also has rules set out by the Constitution.
