In this set of lessons, students will gain a fundamental understanding of cool jazz and explore how cool jazz reflected American culture and society in the 1940's and 1950's.
Students will become familiar with the cultural and historical implications of Early Jazz through listening to and analyzing music of the time while drawing conclusion upon visual, literary, and musical sources.
Students will become familiar with the cultural and historical implications of the Swing Era through listening to and analyzing music of the time while drawing conclusion upon visual, literary, and musical sources.
Students will gain a full understanding of free jazz and fusion styles. Students will also explore how free jazz and fusion reflected American culture and society in the 1960's and 1970's.
Sudents will gain a fundamental understanding of what is occuring on the jazz scene today, as well as, what is likely to occur on the jazz scene in the near future while exploring how today's jazz reflects American culture.
Students will participate in class discussion regarding the identity of jazz music, basic elements of music, the origins of jazz, and why jazz is considered America's music. Students will also compare improvisation with regular conversation, as well as, listen to various jazz saxophonists to compare and contrast their individual playing styles.
