    GEDB Birthday Traditions: Comparing Birthday Traditions Around the World (Lesson 2 of 3)

    Overview

    In this lesson, students will gain knowledge about various birthday traditions from other countries around the world. The students will help the teacher make a chart of the most liked birthday traditions from the countries shared in the story.The students will also give similarities and differences they notice about birthday traditions around the world. This lesson was developed by LaToya Dawson as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.

    Description

    In this lesson, students will gain knowledge about various birthday traditions from other countries around the world. The students will help the teacher make a chart of the most liked birthday traditions from the countries shared in the story.The students will also give similarities and differences they notice about birthday traditions around the world.

     

    Content

    Student Engagement/Motivation

    Students will review the circle map that was completed in Lesson 1 of the unit.

    Students will be asked to answer the following questions:

    Who can raise their hands and give the definition of the word tradition?

    Can anyone share some of the birthday traditions they learned from the previous lesson?

     

    Learning Targets and Criteria for Success

    Learning Targets:

    I can give information about birthday traditions.

    I can collaborate with classmates the smiliarties and differences about birthday traditions that were shared in the story.

    I can use a world map to locate countries.

     

    Criteria for Success:

    I will locate the different countries on the world map that were discussed in the story.

    I will share with a classmate similarities and differences of birthday traditions in the story.

    I will help the teacher make a chart of the most liked birthday traditons dicussed in the story.

    Learning Tasks and Practice

    The teacher will read aloud Birthday Traditions Around the World by Mary D. Lankdford and ask students to listen carefully to identify the different countries that have birthday traditions in the story.

    The teacher will identify the countries being discussed on a world map throughout the read aloud.

    The students will help the teacher create a chart for the seven countries that were talked about in the story. (Finland, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand ,Philippines, and Sweden.) 

    The students will give similarties and differences they notice on the birthday traditions chart.

    After hearing the story read aloud, students will share a favorite birthday tradition from one of the countries in the story with a buddy.

    The teacher will write the traditions the students shared on the chart. 

     

    Collecting and Documenting Evidence of Learning

    The students will be assessed on how well they can recall information from the previous lesson and the ability to name a country from the story that has a birthday tradition in the read aloud.

     

    Student Self-Reflection and Action Steps

    Students were able to share with a classmate their opnion on the similarites and differences about the different birthday traditons shared in the story.While doing this the students had a chance to gain knowledge from other students sharing.

     

    Feedback/Instructional Adjustments

    The teacher gave each student a chance to share a fact learned from the story verbally.

     

    Extended Learning Opportunities 

    Students can locate the seven countries on the map at home with their families.

     

    Teacher Reflection of Learning

    Overall, I think the lesson was amazing. The students were eager to learn information from different parts of the world.  It helped the students think about how birthday traditions differ from country to country.
