GEDB Australian Animal Research Project: Investigate the World (Lesson 4 of 4)

Overview

In this lesson students will learn about the need to protect animals and to prevent extinction of animals. Students will then write an opinion piece on why it is important save animals. This lesson was developed by Tina Deal as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.

Description

In this lesson students will learn about the need to protect animals and to prevent extinction of animals. Students will then write an opinion piece on why it is important save animals.

 

Content

Learning Targets and Criteria for Success

I can create a rough draft of my opinion piece.

I can investigate ways to save animals around the world.  

I will create a written opinion piece to share my thoughts and ideas to save animals.

I will follow the format of an opinion writing.

 

Supplies/Resources

The teacher should find a video on protecting animals to introduce this lesson. Paper and pencils. 

 

Learning Tasks and Practice

Teacher will review format for opinion writing with students.

Teacher will model how to complete graphic organizer to plan opinion piece.

Students will plan their writing using the graphic organizer attached. 

Teacher will show a video of the importance of saving animals.

Students will generate ideas to help preserve animals and their habitats to use in their writing.

Students will state their opinion in an opening paragraph of their writing and provide evidence to support their ideas.

Students must present completed organizer to teacher for approval before beginning writing of opinion piece.

Students will create a draft of their opinion piece and edit for grammar and spelling.

Students will write an opinion piece on why is it important to protect animals that are endangered. 

 

Collecting and Documenting Evidence of Learning

The teacher should use the graphic organizer attached to grade students' planning and the rubric attached to grade final piece.

 

Extended Learning Opportunities 

The teacher could have students raise money to adopt an endangered animal through the World Wildlife Fund.  Simply go the their website and choose an animal and raise money to support the preservation of the animal. They will send an adoption certificate when donation is made.
