GEDB Haiti: Making a Difference (Lesson 4 of 4)
Overview
This will be a culminating project that reviews what students have learned and investigated so far with Haiti. Students are to take one of the problems or difficulties the people of Haiti might have encountered and develop a plan, in this case an invention, to help solve this problem. Students do not have to necessarily create the invention, but must develop a plan for their invention. Students will then present their idea or invention to the class through a poster, powerpoint, imovie, or another source of media outlet. This lesson was developed by Marissa Piersanti as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.

Student Engagement/Motivation
Students will be creating their own invention and be motivated to try to help make a difference in the lives of others through the invention they create.

Learning Tasks and Practice
This will be a culminating project that reviews what students have learned and investigated so far with Haiti. Students are to take one of the problems or difficulties the people of Haiti might have encountered and develop a plan, in this case an invention, to help solve this problem. Students do not have to necessarily create the invention, but must develop a plan for their invention. Students will then present their idea or invention to the class through a poster, powerpoint, iMovie, or another source of media outlet.
Days 1 and 2 Investigate the World and Communicate Ideas – On the first day, students will get in a small group and review previous work completed with their project. The group’s main focus is to pinpoint the hardships and difficulties the Hatitians have encountered and endured and try to come up with a plan on how to make a difference. Together, the groups will brainstorm 4 potential “make a difference” projects to help out the people of Haiti. These should be problems that can be solved and help the people of Haiti have a more sustainable life.
Day 3 Communicate Ideas and Take Action-Students will narrow down these 4 problems and hardships the people have endured and pick 1 problem to help solve. This is not just a solution to the problem but the answer to the problem should be in the form of an invention. This invention they could potentially create would be the solution to the hardship and help make a difference.
Days 4 to Day 7 Communicate Ideas and GE Take Action –Students will take the next couple of days to design and implement their plan. These plans do not need to be fully developed or created but the thought process should be fully developed. Their presentation must include: the problem they chose to solve, their plan for how to solve the problem, the invention they chose to create , and how this invention will solve the problem.
Days 8 and Day 9 Communicate Ideas- Students will present their technology presentations to the class. Presentations must be under 5 minutes.
Day 10 Communicate Ideas – Students will take time in their English Language Arts class to reflect on their invention as well as one other's groups' invention. Their reflection should include why they think the invention would work and what kind of impact the invention could potentially have on the country of Haiti.
Technological Engagement
Technology resources such as Powerpoint, iMovies, Publisher, etc.; poster board; access to the internet
Collecting and Documenting Evidence of Learning
Students will be turning in their final product whether it be a powerpoint, iMovie, etc
Student Self-Reflection and Action Steps
As a whole group, have a discussion about what student's invention could have on the people of Haiti and how beneficial their invention could be. Discuss how their invention could make a difference in the life of the people from Haiti and how their life could potentially be different. Students should reflect about this last question in their notebook.
