Content
Learning Targets and Criteria for Success
Identify and summarize the structures of Earth. (6.E.2.1)
Students will be able to explain how weathering and erosion have created different landforms around the world
Learning Tasks and Practice
Engaging Questions:
- Where have you seen evidence of weathering locally?
- What types of weathering have you seen?
- Where can you find other places around the world that show evidence of weathering?
This lesson will last three days, two of which will be the students doing research and completing a report about a landform or location that has formed or is famous because of its weathering. The students will be assigned groups and they will all work together to complete their report. There are several famous landmarks and locations around the world suitable for this project, the ones I picked include in the United States: The Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Stone Mountain N.C., Luray Caverns, Arches National Park, The Statue of Liberty, and the Old Man of the Mountain. To address our schools, focus on the Global Perspective I also picked several places around the world including: Uluru, Australia, The Parthenon, Athens, Mayan Temple, Mexico, The Sphinx, Egypt, the famous Guatemalan sink hole, The Giants Causeway, Ireland, and Volklinger Hutte, Germany.
After the students finish their research they will present their report to the class and teach each other about their landmarks or locations and will turn in a final report for an assessment grade for this unit.
Technological Engagement
Students will use classroom computers and the internet to complete their research on a topic assigned in the previous section.
Collecting and Documenting Evidence of Learning
Students will fill out their report and be graded using the rubric provided in the accompanying attachment.
