Graphing Sine and Cosine Functions Assessment

Graphing Sine and Cosine Functions Assessment

    Overview

This assessment is used to check for understanding of standard NC.M4.AF.2.3  The assessment is open-ended and asks for students to provide understanding of amplitude, period, phase shift and vertical shift of sine and cosine graphs.  It also assesses writing equations of sine and cosine and sketching their graphs.

    Graphing Trigonometric Functions Assessment

*Determine the amplitude, period, phase shift and vertical shift for each graph.

    1)  y = 3sin(2x) + 1                                        2)  y = ½ cos(x + π) – 6

    3)  y = -4cos(x - 2π) – 1                                4)  y = 1 – 2sin(2x)

*Write an equation that fits the description provided.

    5)  The graph of sine with an amplitude of 2 and period of 4π.

    6)  The graph of cosine with a period of π and a vertical shift down 3.

    7)  The graph of sine with a period of π/2 and a phase shift of π.

    8)  The graph of cosine with an amplitude of ½ and a vertical shift of 2.

*Sketch a graph of the following equations.  Be sure to include vertical asymptotes where needed.
