The subject listed in the description box above does not reflect the standards to which it is aligned. The text is not informational but a literary text and students reading and responding to literature. It is not based on a non-fiction text.

Evaluation: Strong (2)

It appears much thought and effort has been put into this activity. There are many portions which could easily lend themselves to informal observation of student mastery of the material.

Purpose: Strong (2)

There is a great link to inform and encourage teachers to be reflective in their teaching practices to ensure all the standards/objectives aligned to this lesson are addressed. But I don't know if I recall seeing something as it relates to student engagement. Maybe I missed it?

Clarity: Superior (3)

Although I feel students would benefit from more explicit vocabulary instruction (modeling a gradient) for this lesson.

Usability: Strong (2)

This resource is probably accessible to a seasoned 5th grade teacher and the wording/length may prove a little overwhelming for the novice classroom teacher. If a mentor were to tweak and revise some of the lengthier activities, it would be an even greater success!

This lesson does a fine job of providing explicit instruction for 5th grade students in the regular classroom. The links and the resources are helpful. The lesson in itself is quite descriptive and goes into a great amount of detail which is wonderful for the instructor, but there may not be enough time to complete many of the tasks which would take longer than 60-90 minutes to execute. I was very happy to see vocabulary explicitly presented as part of the lesson. This lesson does not only lend itself to comparison/contrast of characters, but goes across other standards such as speaking and listening and determining word meanings of key vocabulary words essential to the understanding of this text.
