October 9th - Community Building
by Joanna Schimizzi 5 years, 1 month agoWhen you think of your organization (district/school),
* who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?
* who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?
I envision that new teachers and teachers that are open to new ideas and change will be early adopters in the #GOOpenNC movement. I also think teachers that are in districts that support and promote the use of it will be early to adopt it.
Teachers who are used to doing what they have always done will probably need extra encouragement to particpate with the program. They are often people who are resistant to change or new ideas in their classroom and they may not want to share resources.
Hi Sheryl! You bring a very valid point up about support from districts. In order for this platform to reach it's potential, we need to make sure there is defintely a top-down "nudge" of this resource. I also believe there is a fine line between forcing someone to use a resource vs. encouraging them to do so. Encouragment definitely helps with push-back!
Who Early Adopters: I think that beginning teachers will be early adopters because they are open to new ideas and embrace a different way of teaching and learning.
Who Extra Encouragement: Unfortunatly there are many teachers who are unwilling to change and grow. They are in every discipline.
Hi Elizabeth! I completely agree with you about the reluctance of veteran teachers. No matter how many years of teaching, there is always room to grow!
The "early adopters" will be new teachers and teachers who are comfortable with technology. They will not will be scared to try this platform. They will be willing to jump in on the deep in.
The veteran teachers will be slower to try. They will hope this is another fad that will pass.
Hi Mary! Reading through other posts I notice that there is a common theme of new teachers as early adopters. I think #GoOpenNC is a great resource for those BTs where they can find standards aligned resources and remixes. I feel that BTs often are afraid of a lesson failing. By looking through comments, ratings, and remixes, they are able to have a wealth a knowledge deeper than their mentor or building!
The limitations inherent in my district will slow adoption of this platform. Early adopters will be teachers newer to the district and more familiar with resources available in traditional public school environments.
Hi Shannon,
I'm curious - what are some of the limitations? I'm wondering if anyone else has similar limitations in their district. This could be an opportunity for collaboration between district leaders to overcome any obstacles.
I think teachers who embrace technology will be on board. Teachers who receive training and are given time to explore will also be more willing to try this. Districts who support and provide PD will encourage teachers to use this resource.
Teachers who are unwilling to try anything new will be a hard sell. Some teachers are not willing to share their ideas and resources with others.
Jane, I agree that time is critical. With may initiatives, training has to be a part of the experience. Luckily this platform might be explored in PLTs even, without the need for scheduling changes.
Regarding the need to meet hard to change teachers, promoting this as an artifact that can be used for standard 1 on the evaluation might help sell it.
Thanks

GoOpenNC would be excellent for our School-based Instructional Coaches and Elementary Connect Team ,which is comprised of grade level representatives for each school. For our medium sized district, these resources would be great to encourage collaboration. While we have district PLC's related to specific subjects, this platform would motivate teachers and ignite new ideas!
Hi Alyssa,
Great thinking! I love the idea that PLCs across the district can connect with one another. There are so many possibilities for ideas and I think this will promote better teaching, too.
I envision teachers who are comfortable with technology and trying new things being early adopters of this movement because they are not afraid to try something new and aren't intimidated by technology.
Those who will need extra encouragement are those teachers who do the same thing every class period or are scared of technology. These teachers may do the same thing over and over and get spectacular results so why change? Or they may also not be comfortable sorting/vetting resources uploaded into a platform.
I hope that we can promote the ease of this platform without thinking about "comfortable with technology" only. But it is a reality. Some districts move into Google with ease, while others still have teachers who don't use that. So having a tech support person can be helpful, for the idea that support is needed.
In my district, I can see our teachers in Science & Social Studies loving these resources. We have a framework in place for K-5 ELA & Math, so those teachers may need a little more support in using these types of resources. As we build and re-evaluate the resources within the frameworks, we will pull resources from here as well.
Hi Tara,
Science and Social Studies seem to be the "left out" curriculums. I forsee those teachers using this platform a lot across the board!
Early adopters will probably be new teachers and possibly teachers who feel very confident with their curriculum. Extra encouragement will need to be given to teachers who are used to doing their own thing and do not usually share.
Hi Kendra,
Many others have agreed with your statement of who extra encouragement will need to be given. Do you have any ideas about how to give this extra encouragement? I'm wondering if we could all put our heads together to brainstorm.
The "early adopters" will be those non-tested subjects that resources were not purchased for.
There is a way for everyone to find something. maybe the meaningful contributions could come from people who use materials that are not so expected. Modified assignments are really useful and can also still be remixed.
Hi Cris,
I am excited that those groups of teachers will finally have a place to go to procure vetted resources.
Early adopters in the #GoOpenNC movement will be those who are comfortable with playing around and exploring new resources. We spend a lot of time finding resources because we do not have textbooks. It is an amazing thought to have quality resources in one place.
Those who will need extra encouragement will be those who are set in their ways of doing things. They have materials they have used for many years and do not like change. I think that taking time with these people and showing them how to navigate this resource will be helpful in getting them to participate.
In my district, the need for cultral responsiveness in materials has forced some to move beyond the usual practice. Likewise, with BYOD and in some counties 1:1 devices we see teachers having to shift. I am thankful for those changes. Necessity is the mother of invention!
Early Adopters may be teachers that are already using similar platforms to search for resources. Having a free, credible platform will be encouraging for these teachers but also for those that are hesitant to navigate a new environment. Our Digital Learning Coaches and our Media Specialists will be valuable resources as our teachers begin to investigate the platform.
Yes, I agree that the role of specialists is significant. I think teachers who lead pd can also demonstrate the facility of using this. Promote teachers trying it as curriculum reviewers so they can see for themselves, too.
I believe that the entire Rutherford County Schools will be early adopters due to the increased focus in PLC and staff development about copyright use and abuse. It has made all of the teachers in my building pause and rethink, spend time researching used resources from the past and taking them out or replacing the copyright protected materials.
Something good coming out of something not so good: a silver lining. It is smart of the county to get on board with this awareness. NCVPS has mandated that expecation too, so I think this can work in many ways as a top down initiative. Thanks
In my district, I belive the early adopters will be the beginning teachers, and those who have been teaching for less than 10 years. Veteran teachers are a little more hesitant to use something "new", so they will need a push. Our district is really great at being early adopters!!
There may be a middle grounds: mentors could be the first invited in. Usually they are veteran teachers and can share their experiences vertically. Thanks for your idea.
I think teachers who are comfortable with technology will be "early adopters" because something new like this will not scare them. They will jump in and start exploring.
Teacher that do not feel comfortable with technology will need an extra push to help them realize GoOpen NC will help them and should make things easier for them.
Thankfully the roll out on NC ed cloud might promote trying it, since the format will be easy access. Time for trying this will be critical.
I think the "early adopters" will be any teacher willing to try a new resource. In my school, this will be 90% of the population. We are always looking for and sharing great new resources.
I don't think many will need extra encouragement to use goopennc as a resource, but I don't think there will be many who submit their resources.
Kristen, how lucky! I loved reading that your school is full of folks who will try new stuff. Yay! Sadly I know that without time built in, it can be hard to promoite sharing. Asking admin for time during professional development may make this real. Even weekly PLC time could be used. So maybe...
I think new teachers and our techy teachers will be "early adopters" and upload to OER commons. I think they will love this push for sharing and collaborating quality resources that meet curriculum standards.
We have several teachers in our school who work with TPT and they might not jump onboard.
I also notice that new teachers are coming to us with an awareness of the standards that isn't shared sometimes from the veteran experience. Fear of tech was something we talked about in some of my discussions too.
Early adopter will probably be new teachers, and teachers that are always looking for new ideas.
Those that will need extra encouragement will be those that do the same things year after year. Those that feel like no changes are every really necessary.
I hope that BTs can engage with the platform in this way. I also think that change can happen with the not new folks :) when they see its utility (which could be that the younger teachers are using that)
The "early adopters" will be teachers who typically spend more time tailoring resources to fit the needs of their students, open minded, and willing to spend time learning a new resource.
Teachers who will need extra encouragement are those who have always resisted change and are stagnant in their teaching.
