When you think of your organization (district/school),

* who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?

* who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?

JAMIE KING 4 years, 6 months ago

1) Early adopters; I think it is getting staff to use this as their first resource and that will come with time and teachers exploring the resource and finding quality materials.

2) Veteran teachers who think they have it

My larger concern with the OER platform is that we already have open curriculum using OPEN UP math, and I worry that this will have teachers thinking outside of that curriculum and using these versus using the whole OPEN UP curriculum.

Hi Jamie!

This is a valid concern- maybe you could start by targeting groups of teachers to roll this out to - with Math being the last giving time to think about how they could use the platform intentionally.

* who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?

I think that my younger staff members will get on board; specifically my science and social studies teachers who are searching for materials since we have done away with text books.

* who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?

Probably my veteran teachers who already have established plans that they use yearly.

Greetings Sarah,

This will be a great resource for those teachers who don't have a textbook or curricula.  I'm excited about this aspect!

KRISTINE GROVES 4 years, 6 months ago

I believe that the district level personnel and school-level leadership (instructional lead teachers, department chairs) should be the early adopters for  #GoOpenNC because they are the people who can help create buy-in with the rest of the teachers in the school and begin the conversation about its benefits.

I think that older teachers who do not use a lot of technology will need some extra encouragement to participate because they don't feel as comfortable with the technology aspect.

Rebecca Welch 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Kristine,

You make a good point - leadership can create buy-in for their staff members.  I think we need to consider how we might do this so that it's not overwhelming to any group of teachers...veterans or beginners.  Luckily, the platform is super user friendly!

* who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?

I think our more technology-comfortable teachers will adopt quickly because they are already online looking for resources. Knowing that these are already "approved" and aligned to curriculum will make this resource even more appealing.

* who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?

Our teachers who are overwhelmed by technology will need extra encouragement to participate becauce they already stroggle to see how they can use resources online.

Rebecca Welch 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi!

Knowing the resources are approved will be valuable - especially when teachers are searching by standard.  There may be less of a question of "what does this standard actually mean?"

Tara Pierce 4 years, 6 months ago

1- I believe that the technology team as well as curriculum specialist in my district will be the early adopters in the #GoOpenNC movement because they are the PD specialist for the district.

2- I believe the "stuck in their ways because I'm ___ years to retirement" teachers will need extra encouragement to participate because they are on the way out and not looking to try new tools.

Rebecca Welch 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Tara,

I'm reading through posts and most people agree that the veteran teachers are the ones who will be resistant.  I'm wondering if there's any way we can put our heads together to brainstorm ways to give them that extra encouragement.

EMILY HARE 4 years, 6 months ago

I think the Math Community in NC will embrace this. We have connected and shared a lot of resources informally in the last 5 years or so .This seems like a great place to streamline that work!

Rebecca Welch 4 years, 6 months ago

We should create a Math group in the platform where we can connect.  I would love that, and so would my Math colleagues!

Karen Dellinger 4 years, 6 months ago

early adopters:  new teachers fresh out of college, not afraid to try new things

extra encouragement:  veteran teachers, don't want to change what they're doing

Gillian Moore 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Karen!  I agree with you about both of these groups of educators.  BTs typlcally have a more open mind to try new platforms and ideas.  I do worry about the veteran teachers who think that there is no room to grow!

ANDREA FULGHUM 4 years, 6 months ago

I think the early adopters in my school will be the social studies/English department.  They work in integrated teams, and they are quick to try new things.

I think our BTs will need convincing because I think they feel overwhelmed with resources and tools that are already being thrown at them.

Gillian Moore 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Andrea!  I never thought about the abundance of resources for BTs and with that abundance how overwhelming it may be.  #GoOpenNC could be a great starting point for those BTs!

LORI GARDNER 4 years, 6 months ago

"Early Adopters" will include both veteran and new teachers at my school who sincerely want to be the best teacher than can be.  They will embrace the opportunity to collaborate with others and share resources.  These teachers will also search for something "better" than what they currently use in their classroom, always striving to improve.

Those teachers who have "always done it the same way" will be the ones who will need encouragement, just like they do with any change or any new expectation.  We just have to share with them how it will truly be beneficial to them individually.

Gillian Moore 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Lori!  I think you bring up a very good point about "embracing the opportunity."  #GoOpenNC can be a great resource if, we as educators, use it to it's potential (uploading, rating, remixing, etc.).

CHERRI WHITE 4 years, 6 months ago

Early adopters - teachers who are constantly searching online for new activities and those without textbooks books because they really want to have quality resources that are readily accessible

Extra encouragement - teachers reluctant to use technology and those who do not want to share because this is something new and they are not sure how this will benefit them

Gillian Moore 4 years, 6 months ago

Hi Cherri!  I love the idea of of using #GoOpenNC to fill the void of textbooks!

AMANDA DIGANGI 4 years, 6 months ago

*Who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?

The early adopters will be the younger/newer teachers.  People who are more open to change and take in new things.

*Who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?

Veteran teachers will need extra encouragement as they are stuck in their ways.  Somone who is not comfortable with technology may be hesitant to jump in.

CHRISTINA ZANOTTI 4 years, 6 months ago

This was a pretty interesting for me to think about: I came from a school district that very much seemed institutionalized and scripted. Now I have had the opportunity to be working at Charter School and it is an eye opener to how I am moving forward with my career in education.

Thinking about who I would envision to be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC would most likely be new teachers and the teachers who are more so strong at being the teacher leaders of the school. I know that there are always so many teachers that are in leadership roles in different areas, however this would be a challenge to get some of those teachers who are skeptical of change.  The reason being just being a new teacher in a new place, it has given me an opportunity to see experience that being new to a place (not necessarily to teaching) has given me the encouragement to want to try new things and be more open to different opportunities and ways to use and get information for what is needed for my students.

Those needing the extra encouragement would be a veteran teacher that is stuck in their own ways.  Yes, their structures and routines may work for them to be comfortable with their teaching pedagogy, however with all the changes in education and how students are such diverse learners these veteran teachers need some concrete resources and help to encourage them to step out of their box to jump on board with more up to date strategies in teaching. (especially when it comes to using technology to assist in finding new resources)
