When you think of your organization (district/school),
* who do you envision will be "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC movement? Why?
* who do you envision will be need extra encouragement to participate? Why?
I think early adopters will be the teachers that are newer to the profession. Out of necessity they will use and will then hopefully also contribute to the place that has helped them.
The most difficult are those that have seen other initiatives come and go. They may be concerned that they are wasting their time. In that sense it will be really important to show a robust platform right up front.
I completely agree! I think we will also have to "win over" some teachers who have gotten comforatble with finding their resources on TPT or have gotten used to initiatives coming and going. Our newer teachers seem more open to finding resources and may be how we reach others.
Early adopters will be young teachers who are used to technology being the way the communitcate and dissimenate information. There are also those more experienced teachers who jumped right in with Canvas, Quizlett, etc. and see the value that online resources can have in their lessons and student work.
I feel that some of the more experience teachers will be more hesitant because they have seen so much come and go, as well as the fact that they sometimes tend to have a system that works for them and don't always see that change is necessary. Also I think that some subject areas will need more encouragement because their classes are more physically interactive and they are not at a computer etc for much of their day -- ie CTE classes such as masonry, metal fabrication etc.
I agree about early adopters. I also agree about teachers who might be hesitant. Perhaps they can be encouraged to contribute something they have created!
I agree. Those teachers who utilize digital platforms will be open to utilizing the resources. Especially when they find it easily links to Canvas and Google Classroom.
I envision the Exceptional Childrens Dept to be the "early adopters" in the #GoOpenNc movement, because we seem to be the dept. that utilizes research based interventions and resources and the last to recieve resources or discover where these resources are available.
EC/Resource teachers have a natural tendancy to search for high-quality resources since their classroom resources are so limited. I also think they will value the professional community that will be developed through this initiative.
"Early adopters" in the #GoOpenNC are teachers that have passion for teaching, and creative ones who want to save prep time as well.
I believe teachers who dont want to get out of their comfort zones need extra encouragement to participate.
As an EC Teacher for high school, I totally agree with you on this!!
I agree. I think it will take early adopters talking about how useful it is and the resources they have found/remixed to get everyone invested.
I see the "veteran" Teachers as the ones to need more encouragement...Change is hard for some.
In my district the "early adopters" will most likely be our newer teachers as well as our Digital Learning Specialist/Curriculum specialists. New teachers are growing their resources daily and are open to explore items that have been vetted and provided by other educators. Our Digital Learning team and curriculum specialists are the forefront of our district with rolling out new items.
Teachers that will need extra encouragement are the group of educators that are close to retirement. Many of them have courses that run like well-oiled machines. For them, I would encourage sharing their wonderful resources.
One idea I have for my building is "each one reach one". If I can get at least one person per department onboard, then the teachers would eventually begin to investigate and search. The most resistant will keep hearing, "I found it on GoOpenNC." Eventually, they will buy in.
I think the early adopters will be your newer teachers, up to year 5-6. I think they would be willing to contribute to the discussions and lesson plans. The harder group to need encouragement I feel will be the veteran teachers who like to do things their way. It will not be as necessary to them because they have been teaching for years.
Yes! Let's encourage those veteran teachers to share their lessons as well as give feedback to what's there!
I think the mindset shift will be cautious. However, once indivduals witness the value, this will be a win:win! Thank you.
Yes! Our teachers have seen so may initiatives come and go. Those teachers may be fearful of investing in this platform. I do think the more we use it and evaluate resources, individuals will value the platform and its usefulness.
Yes! We have to #ModeltheWay. Thank you.
The "early adopters" in my district will be teacher leaders and beginning teachers who are eager for more resources.
The ones who need extra encouragement are those that have a fixed mindset and who adopt the philosophy of "I've done this for years no need to do anything different!"
Overall, I am very excited about the possibilities of this resource!
I agree about the fixed mindset. Those who just keep reusing the same resources because they "work" will need to hear and rehear about this resource. I think as they hear their peers discussing the resources, discussions, and their district leaders directing them to find things in the platform, they will eventually "buy in."
I think the early adopters will be those who are already open about sharing and collaborating with others. I feel these teachers are also those who have more experience with technology.
I think those who aren't comfortable with technology or are hesitant to change will need extra encouragment to participate. It will be uncomfortable for these teachers to get out of their comfort zone.
As a person who has a natural tendancy to find and remix, I am excited about what this platform has to offer. I agree that we will have to get some teachers outside of their comfort zone to fully participate in the platform. For those comfortable with technology, I think it will be a smoother transition.
*I believe anyone open to change and not set in their ways will benefit from this platform. As teachers, we must be willing to change with the times and adapt for us and our students.
*Anyone that is set in their ways (this can happen to a 2nd/3rd year teacher or a veteran teacher) or unwilling to change. I am a veteran teacher and I believe this is a great resource for me and my team to use.
I agree Ashley, and I appreciate the view that anyone can be unwilling...even an beginning teacher. I believe this platform has a lot to offer any teacher who is in search of resources that best meet the needs of their learners. I think those who are "unwilling" initially will need to hear others talking about the resources they have found on this platform and how they are using them.
Early Adopters more than likely will be technology savvy teachers, out of the box thinkers and your new teachers with at least 3 or more years of experience.
Veteran teachers are the ones that are going to need extra encouragement.
I agree.
I agree. I am hoping to get at least one person per department on board initially. My thought is if they keep saying "I found it on GoOpenNC," I will have better buy in from those resistant to something new.
Early adopters will be anyone who likes technology. Years of experience does not matter. People who like technology are willing to try something new to get better classroom content.
The extra encouragement people will be anyone who does not like technology or seems to struggle with memorizing how to use new programs.
I agree Krystal. I am thinking about getting together a group of teachers who are more technology savvy and willing to try new things. Then, maybe I can have them bring those resources back to the team. Which I am hoping, in turn will mean more people will "buy in".
I agree Krystal. I am thinking about getting together a group of teachers who are more technology savvy and willing to try new things. Then, maybe I can have them bring those resources back to the team. Which I am hoping, in turn will mean more people will "buy in".
I agree David! Anyone can be resistant to new ideas. I do think this platform lends itself nicely to those who are utilizing platforms like Canvas and Google Classroom. Hopefully others will begin to see the benefit of searching for resources aligned to NC standards.
I envision that teachers using this platform will be staff that is open to using technology and learning a new way to locate materials & resource materials to use in the classroom. Many teachers create files, powerpoints, games and assessments to meet the needs of their students. This platform allows for us to share what we have already created and make it better. It allows for use to use materials made by others, thus saving time not having to create resources someone else has already made and openly shared.
I believe that some people will take a little extra time to be willing to look towards getting resources online through a new platform because so many are already used to the structure of familiar websites and/or their own file cabinet. People needing extra encouragement to use and participate in this platform would be those who are not active in google docs and shared drives already.
I think a lot of teachers are looking for resources but don't want to spend money to buy things. Until now, I have found the free resources are typically lacking. I envision this saving me so much time by easily finding quality materials. I am a remixer by nature, so that feature makes me excited also.
I think new teachers and singleton teachers will be early adopters because they are most likely to be excited about trying something new to connect with others and share or gather resources.
I think some veteran teachers will need extra encouragement to try something new, share their knowledge and expertise, and explore the resources available rather than continuing to do what they've always done.
Great points Angela! I think new teachers will be eager to learn about this new platform. Veteran teachers are going to need more encouragement, I agree. I plan to encourage my veteran teachers to try to add their resources or comment on other resources.
I especially agree about singleton teachers. Those teachers are typically open to joining online communities because they are looking for support from their peers. I do think teachers who have solid PLCs or have established themselves in the same classes may be resistant to change. I hope to get at least one person per department onboard so others can see the benefit from their peers.
The early adopters will be media specialists and other individuals who were exposed to OER in the summer digital learning classes. Also, teachers who love to explore digital platforms and work best through the digital learning concept/probably the younger teachers who have been brought up using technology rather than paper books/resources.
The ones who will need to be more encouraged will be those that are afraid of 'computers' and those that don't want to change the way that they've always done things!!
Media Coordinators are usually our "go to" person in the building. Having them as a leader in this intiative will be a true advantage to getting the word out about his platform.
The early adopters will be the teachers that are newer to teaching and those that are struggling with available resources in their schools.
The teachers that will need extra encouragement will most likely the ones that are hesitant to change or try somehting new. Some feel that this will go away shortly like so many other "things" they are been introduced to.
