Students will examine an historical newspaper, a piece of historical fiction, and their social studies textbooks for accounts of the civil rights movement, and then define 'equality' and 'discrimination'. They will then use these definitions to look for instances of equality and discrimination in modern society.

This resource provides a brief story, with photographs, of Helen Keller. It cites her accomplishments and celebrates her advocacy for social justice for people with disabilities.

Students will study a variety of historical figures and specifically focus on one person to understand more about his/her life.

All students in the class will be introduced to various historical figures (from their community, state, nation, and the world).  The teacher will read books and find videos from the internet that explain the contributions that these historical figures made to our world, and she will guide students to discuss what life would be like today without their contributions.  Then higher-level students will be asked to complete analogies connecting historical figures to their contributions.  Students will need to research via books and the internet the historical figures and their contributions to be able to complete the analogies.  Students will also write their own analogies with good relationships.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

The lesson addresses how the community is impacted by innovators like George Washington Carver. Students examine the life of George Washington Carver and other innovators including those in the local community to learn about and use problem-solving skills and imagine themselves as problem-solvers and innovators.

In this activity, students read or listen to Dr. Martin Luther's King's historic I Have a Dream speech. They will then write and illustrate an acrostic poem using the word DREAM, relating the lines of the poem to Dr. King's speech or his impact on the American civil rights movement.

In this activity, students will read Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers, and then take another look at one dramatic moment in the story. After revisiting the moment, they will create a new scene that is not in the book, based on the character of Abraham Lincoln.

Students can access an interactive resource around the United States Flag from Fort McHenry which the Star-Spangled Banner poem was written about.

In this classroom activity, students will recognize the Smithsonian Institution and be able to explain what a museum does. This is accomplished through the use of discussion questions and activities in which they relate stories from prior museum visits or share ideas for a museum that they would like to create.

This video series is broken up into two-part mini programs which each include a short video history lesson followed by a second video with a craft activity. These videos are designed to be viewed together to learn about history of Vance Birthplace State Historic Site in the mountains of North Carolina and life in the 1800s.

In this video, students will learn about the flag from the War of 1812 which is on display at the Smithsonian Museum. They will learn about the history of the flag and the efforts which are being made to preserve it.

Students will learn about the remarkable travels of Marco Polo. They will consult maps to locate Venice and follow the routes Marco took to Beijing and back. They will learn about the challenges of traveling along the Silk Road, discover some interesting facts about China under Mongol rule, and find out how Marco came to produce his famous book.

Students will learn about equality and the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Students will listen to the Dr. Seuss story Sneetches to get an understanding about being treated unfairly. Then students will compare and contrast Martin Luther King Jr and the Sneecthes.

Children create top hats out of paper by reading or listening to directions that use simple terms from geometry. After making the hat, they measure their heights with and without the hat, and then take a picture wearing the hat.

The NC Kids' Exploration Journals are a fun educational tool to help youth explore their communities and natural surroundings! Each journal contains: 18 multidisciplinary activities with guided prompts, 6 lined journal pages for recording observations and reflections, and 4 blank pages for individual creativity.

The digital versions of the journal are designed to be printed out for students either as individual activities or in its entirety so that they can explore their school yard, local park, or own backyard. Though designed for 1st - 5th-graders, older audiences may enjoy them too! They are also available in both English and Spanish languages.
