In this lesson, students will understand that the forest is a renewable resource that is to be conserved and utilized. Students will learn the different management techniques that are currently being employed. Students will also discover how the forest impacts their everyday life.

In this lesson, students learn about ecosystem functions and the natural processes that occur in forests. They read the essay “Odyssey” from Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac and discuss the concepts of change, interconnectivity, and sustainability. In small groups, students research a forest ecosystem and then work in a large group to create ecosystem food webs. Together, students use the knowledge they have gained to create a story that describes the journey of an atom through different forest ecosystems.

Fundamentals of Biology focuses on the basic principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and recombinant DNA. These principles are necessary to understanding the basic mechanisms of life and anchor the biological knowledge that is required to understand many of the challenges in everyday life, from human health and disease to loss of biodiversity and environmental quality.

In this activity, students will use a simple sampling method to determine if invasive species impact other plants and animals in the forest. This activity focuses on garlic mustard, but the same procedure can also be used with other invasive plants in different habitats. Note: This activity can also be simulated in the classroom with different kinds of leaves to represent different plants.

The NOBA Project is a growing collection of expert-authored, open-licensed modules in psychology, funded by the Diener Education Fund. From these open modules, Tori Kearns and Deborah Lee created an arranged open textbook for her introductory psychology class. This textbook was created under a Round One ALG Textbook Transformation Grant.

In this activity, students review research where scientists studied the genetic origin of variation in human skin color using a model organism, the zebrafish. Students will analyze histograms and then answer a series of questions to better understand mutations.
In this lesson, students will explore various modes of inheritance through a …
In this lesson, students will explore various modes of inheritance through a hands-on activity creating offspring of a fictitious organism. Students will complete Punnett Squares for various genetic crosses, and analyze and interpret the results of those crosses. Students will be able to predict the genotype and phenotype of P1 and F1 generations using Punnett Squares. Students will be able to identify complex patterns of inheritance such as codominance and incomplete dominance.

In this lesson, students will be engaged in activities to increase their understanding of modeling as a tool for public health preparedness. In the first portion of the lesson, students will obtain simulated patient samples and perform a test to determine if these patients are positive for a simulated rapid influenza diagnostic test. By using this information, students will interpret their results, considering false-positive and false-negative test results. As the lesson progresses, the scale of the outbreak scenario will increase, and students will use mathematical models to calculate the transmissibility of the virus and countermeasures that would be needed to limit the spread of influenza. Students will examine the herd immunity threshold of a population by determining the vaccine efficacy. Final questions will challenge the students to analyze the benefits, limitations, and applications of modeling for preparing and responding to future pandemics.
