Finding Areas of Rectilinear Figures

Students select a rectilinear figure, sketch it, and show how they can decompose the figure into smaller rectangles using a horizontal or vertical line. Students write a multiplication equation to find the area of each of the smaller rectangles in square units, add the products to find the total area of the figure, and repeat the steps with other rectilinear figures provided.

The students will explore the impacts of aluminum cans and the process of recycling.  The task requires the students to gather and graph data about aluminum can use as well as interpret the data collected.  At the conclusion of the lesson, the students develop a plan for future action in regards to recycling.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Students explore the concept of "reducing" solid waste and how it relates to product packaging and engineering advancements in packaging materials. They read about and evaluate the highly publicized packaging decisions of two major U.S. corporations. Then they evaluate different ways to package items in order to minimize the environmental impact, while considering issues such as cost, availability, product attractiveness, etc. In addition, students explore "hydropulping" and consider its use as a recycling process.

The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate Newton's third law of motion which states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction through a small wooden car. The Newton cars show how action/reaction works and how the mass of a moving object affects the acceleration and force of the system. Subsequently, the Newton cars provide students with an excellent analogy for how rockets actually work.
