This unit affords teachers with opportunities to lead children in active singing games and

Arcade type game that has students press specific letter keys on the keyboard to play songs. The game requires students to hold down the letter key for the correct number of beats, or length of the bar, thus training them to keep a steady beat when playing. If pitches move by step, letters are adjacent. Pitches that have larger intervals are further apart. There is a free play option where students can create their own melodies which would be great for improvisation.

Students will explore creating moods with music. Students will assimilate this new knowledge through the analysis of a story and the creation of a musical composition that reflects and enhances it. This activity will culminate with the recording of their musical accompaniment and story to produce a book on tape.

Students and their teachers are introduced to the Kurdish people and their history and culture by
leading them on a Kurdish experience full of singing and dancing.

Students will use instruments and voice to improvise simple harmonic accompaniments, stylistically appropriate responses, rhythmic and melodic ostinato accompaniments, as well as, simple melodic embellishments of familiar melodies. This lesson can be used and adapted for grades K-8 with specific suggestions given.

In this three lesson unit, the concept areas of rhythm, melody, harmony, form and tone color are used. Skills will be developed in singing, moving, listening, playing instruments, creating, analyzing, and relating music to other areas such as history and literature.

Students will become more familiar with the syllables of the solfege scale. This lesson is designed to fulfill Standard #5 of the National Standards for Music: Reading and notating music.

Students will demonstrate call and response using a recording of "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" and a melody from Mozart's Symphony No. 40.

Using Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, students will discover how difficult it is to compose music with a hearing loss. Children will develop an understanding of overcoming disabilities and preserving through life's struggles.

This lesson introduces students to Babar, an elephant portrayed in the children's books by Jean de Brunhof. Students will listen to Francis Poulenc's musical composition of the same name, written to reflect the scenes in Jean de Brunhof's book. Students will gain an understanding of how powerful the use of simple rhythm instruments is in retelling the story. Students will also create visual works of art based on the sounds they hear in the audio performance.

Students will get into groups and compose with simple rhythms/pizza toppings to complete the Pizza Man, Pizza Man rap, and then perform their piece with non-pitched percussion instruments.

singers to organize their next improvised stanza in their heads—even as the music is
sounding. (McGowan,1991) This form of traditional music is active in the northeastern
region of Brazil. Embolada has a fast rhythm and complex tone that deftly incorporate varied
lyrics and onomatopoeia. Embolada is mostly improvised following a dialogue by the
“Embolador”, who sings while hitting the Pandeiro at short intervals in between verses. The
singer needs considerable skill, experience, and a sense of humor . Embolada is sung in the
streets; it is influenced by American rap music and African music. Using the Embolada
rhythm, students can improvise lyrics and sing solo.

Students learn that it is possible to use some of the same strategies for understanding music that we use to understand literature. Students have an opportunity to identify a musical theme when played by in a variety of styles.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the musical form canon. This lesson is designed to fulfill Standard #1 of the National Standards for Music: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music; and Standard #6: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

In this cooperative improvisation, students will go through a process of composition very much like what a composer might do in preparation for creating a serious piece of music. Students find inspiration, research details, imagine what might be possible and then deal with the practicalities of the performance group that they have chosen. Writing down music to share with someone in print is the final stage and may take years to perfect, but this non-written experience allows each child to imagine and create a unique, musical expression which can be shared with others.
