Higher-level students will collaboratively construct a classroom newspaper, “Diversity Matters” or “Diverse Times” etc.  Students will learn about different cultures within their community and region via the internet, videos, books, and local newspaper articles about local and regional cultural festivals.  Then students will compare and contrast the cultures (traditions, celebrations, dress, food, language, etc.).  Students will work together to make analogies and metaphors to compare/contrast different cultures.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. In these videos, artifacts from the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site collection are featured with clues about their purpose. Students try to solve the History Mystery before the answer is revealed.

Higher-level students will read books and articles from the internet about different aspects of other cultures (food, dress, recreations, language, traditions, beliefs, etc.), and as they read, they will take notes on these aspects/cultures that have influenced their own lives. Then they will create a “Me” web on the computer to demonstrate the different aspects they have “adopted” from other cultures. Higher-level students will read the story of Cinderella from many different cultures. They willconsider why Cinderella was treated as she was and how prejudice occurs across cultures. They will answer pre-seminar questions and participate in a Paideia seminar. In this activity, students use a story map to follow the historic route of the Buncombe Turnpike and learn more about its economic and cultural impact on western North Carolina. Students will also see how the landscape has transformed in the nearly 200 years since the creation of the Turnpike.
