Students can learn about Flora MacDonald and the impact she still has with many North Carolinians who have a Scottish heritage. This article was originally produced for the Tar Heel Junior Historian.

Students will examine the three historical portraits Andrew Jackson, William Pitt, and Portrait of a Boy for symbolism and its relationship to the concept of meaning. After learning more about Andrew Jackson’s involvement in the Cherokee Indians’ Trail of Tears in North Carolina, students will research another historical figure important during that movement and produce a historical portrait, similar to the examples shown, and a cinquain poem.

In this article and activity, students will understand and be able to summarize the cause of and results from the Trail of Tears.

This site provides a map outlining all 100 counties in North Carolina. Clicking on a county provides an explanation concerning how people, events, and developments brought changes or recognition to that area. The history of the county is provided as well as manufacturing information, population demographics, and agricultural products specific to that area. This Educator Notebook provides information on Women’s History in North Carolina for teachers to use as a resource, either as stand-alone units, or integrated into standard curriculum. Included is research from museum curators and educators, and articles published in the Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine which are written for students in grades 4-12. Lesson plans and suggested activities complement many of the topics. Students will understand the role women played in the Civil War. They will also appreciate the
ways in which museums use objects to study how people in the past did their jobs.

Students will learn some details about the civil rights movement. They will explain historical events that occured in local communities as well as see the impact of contributions made by historical figures in local communities over time. They will be able to explain change over time through historical narratives and how multiple perspectives are portrayed through historical narratives.

Students can learn about the devleopment of Raleigh after the fire of 1833 and the impact of the first railroad line to the city. Thestudents will also discover the background behind the nickname "Tornado", which Raleigh had for many years.

In this activity, students use a story map to follow the historic route of the Buncombe Turnpike and learn more about its economic and cultural impact on western North Carolina. Students will also see how the landscape has transformed in the nearly 200 years since the creation of the Turnpike.
